Stephen Dauphinais Wins TORSE for $17,933

Stephen Dauphinais, Winner of TORSE
James To Stephen Dauphinais said this was his favorite game when I was taking the winner’s photo, and it’s easy to see why. He has a solid grasp of all the variations in the game, and that was on display today.
Dauphinais was one of the bigger stacks through most of the day, though Nu Teliani was top for the early part. He came into Day 2 about 8k behind Teliani, and he never really seemed in jeopardy, and he really turned it up during five-handed play, which went on for four levels.
It was during five-handed play that he started stacking up big, as Teliani slowly lost chips. When she finally hit the rail in 5th place during Level 24, that opened the floodgates, and the game was over before the end of that same level.
Dauphinais took out the final three players on his own in quick succession, with the heads up against James To lasting only a few hands. He won it in a deuce-to-seven hand with a ten 8. Dauphinais raised to 100k, then drew two to To’s 3.
To check-raised after the first draw and Dauphinais called the 100k. He took 2 again while To only needed 1. To bet 100k and Dauphinais called, with both players taking 1 on the final draw of the game.To checked, then called off the rest of his stack when Dauphinais bet 100k.
To showed an ace on his final draw, while Dauphinais drew well to a ten-eight for the big win. This is Daupinais’s first ring, but he has a trophy from last year’s Main Event at the Tourament of Champions in Edmonton, and he had a huge score in 2024 at the WSOP in Vegas with 3rd in the Milly Maker for more than $600k. He’ll be pretty happy to pick up his first ring in his favorite game, though.

Level: 24 (10000/20000/50000, 25000/50000, 50000/100000) Entries: 2/95 Prizes: $66,025
Fat Cheong Wong Stud 8
They are heads up in the TORSE now after Fat Cheong Wong ended his day in 3rd place. Wong brought it in with a 6♠, then called when Stephen Dauphinais completed to 50k.
Wong got 8♠ on fourth, while Dauphinais added an A♣ to his Q♦. Daupinais bet 50k, Wong raised to 100k, Dauphinais raised to 150k, and Wong called all in.
Dauphinais ran out A♠K♦Q♠3♠ for aces and queens, while Wong couldn’t find a better hi and neither player had a low.

Stephen Horak Out in 4th Place for $5,610
Level: 24 (10000/20000/50000, 25000/50000, 50000/100000) Entries: 3/95 Prizes: $66,025
Stephen Horak Stud
The field is down to three left now after Stephen Horak ended his day on Stud. He had two pair on 4th street, but Stephen Dauphinais found trip sixes to take it down and sent Horak out in 4th place tonight.
There’s another break in 20 minutes, and I’ll grab more chip counts then.
-
Nu Teliani Out in 5th Place for $4,078
Level: 24 (10000/20000/50000, 25000/50000, 50000/100000) Entries: 4/95 Prizes: $66,025
Nu Teliani Nu Teliani had a stellar run through Day 1, bagging the chip lead. She held that lead through much of the day on Day 2 as well, but as the field got shorter, she started running into problems. She was down to her last 47k in the previous level, but doubled to stay alive in a 2-7 hand against James To, but she couldn’t keep chipping up, and she recently lost her stack for 5th place, though I was out of the room when it happened.

Dauphinais Has the High
Level: 23 (10000/10000/40000, 20000/40000. 40000/80000) Entries: 5/95 Prizes: $66,025 Stephen Horak called 40k from the cutoff, and Nu Teliani completed from the small blind before Stephen Dauphinais checked his big blind.
It checked around on the 9♥3♣4♠ flop, but after a check from Teliani on the J♥ turn, Dauphinais fired 80k from the big blind. Horak called, but Teliani mucked. Dauphinais bet 80k again on the 8♥ river, and Horak called, but mucked his hand when Dauphinais showed J♠10♥7♥7♦ for the straight flush, and Horak apparently couldn’t make a low for half.

Teliani Doubles to Stay Alive

Nu Teliani was the leader for much of the day, but she’s been chipped down during five-handed play. She just found a double in deuce when she called off a raise to 80k from James To with only 47k.
She took 1 on the first draw, then patted 2nd and 3rd, while To took 3, 3, and 2. Teliani ended with an 87, which was well ahead of To’s ace low.

Fat Wong had the betting lead through most of the hand, showing a pair of tens from fifth. He bet fifth and sixth, before check-calling on seventh when James To bet. Wong revealed a 3rd ten in the hole for a set, while To found a 74 low for the bottom end of the pot, and they chopped it up.
There’s another break upcoming in about 15 minutes, and I’ll grab another round of chip counts then.

Stephen Horak: 3♣8♦5♥3♠
Nu Teliani: 5♦8♥9♥2♣Stephen Horak brought it in with a completion to 25k, and Nu Teliani was the only caller. She check-called for 25k on fourth street, and she check-called again for 50k on fifth street.
Horak fired 50k on both sixth and seventh, with Teliani calling. Horak showed A♦A♥K♥ in the hole for aces up, and Teliani mucked her hand.

Stephen Horak brought it in with 2♦ and Fat Wong called with [invalid notations]. The rest of the table folded, but Horak and Wong called.
Horak got a 6♣, Wong pulled K♦, and Teliani got J♥. Wong started the action with a check, and Teliani checked behind, then both players called the 15k bet from Horak.
Horak drew 3♣, Wong got 3♠, while Teliani got 8♣. Wong started again with a check, and everyone else followed suit.
Horak paired up on 6th street with 6♥, while Wong pulled 5♥ and Teliani got 2♣. Horak took over the betting lead and fired 30k. Wong folded, but Teliani called to seventh.
Horak fired another 30k, and Teliani called on the face down 7th street. “Trip sixes and an 8 low,” said Horak as he revealed ace-eight-six in the hole, giving him the 86 low and trip sixes. Teliani muched her hand to send the scoop to Horak.

They are down to 7 now after Craig Caldwell sent his stack to Nu Teliani. She hit the nut spade flush in Stud to send Caldwell out and bring the field to 7.
Jordan Pennock busted in 9th place in a hand I didn’t see, and they are now at the final table of seven players.

Craig Caldwell raised to 12k, and Nu Teliani reraised to 24k. Caldwell called to the first draw, where Teliani took 1 and Caldwell took two.
Teliani led for 12k and Caldwell called to the second draw, where they both patted. “What’s it called?” Teliani asked with a smile. “Snowing?”
She fired 24k, and Caldwell called, with both players patting once again. Teliani fired another 24k and Caldwell called, but mucked when Teliani showed 7-5-4-3-2 for the nuts.
Benjamin Vandermeer & Henry Oh were the most recent casualties in this one to bring the field to 11 remaining as the break approaches. The final table in this one will be 7 players.

Level: 12 (700/1000/3000, 1500/3000, 3000/6000) Entries: 34/95 Prizes: $66,025 The first-ever TORSE game in Alberta drew 95 entries, about 25 shy of the inaugural HORSE tournament here back in January. That put $66,025 into the prize pool, to be divided 15 ways on Day 2.
After 12 levels of play on the opening day, Nu Teliani leads the 34 remaining players with 181k. Stephen Dauphinais, Luteng Li, Matthew McKinnon, and Darrell Moore round out the top five stacks. Two out of the last three HORSE winners are also still in the field — KKPoker rep Chris Alcindor won the inaugural ring in HORSE here in January (possibly the ONLY HORSE ring awarded here, if the switch to TORSE is permanent), while Jared Dobson chopped the HORSE game in the Summer Super Stack this year.
This game played out while Day 2 of the Mini Main Event was finishing, so I didn’t have any time to watch the Day 1 action. Day 2 for this game will be my main focus on Monday, but after another very late night, I won’t be around for the start of the second day of play. I should be on the floor by 4 PM at the latest, and that should still be before they hit the money spots.

63 Entries so Far for First-Ever TORSE
Level: 2 (200/300, 300/600, 100/300/100, 300/600) Entries: 63/63 Prizes: $43,785 The first-ever TORSE game in Alberta is underway with the action in Level 2. There are 63 players in the game, and it looks like none have busted yet, but in a limit rotation game, that’s not unexpected. It will be a few more levels before it’s reasonable for stacks to go in on anything but the craziest coolers. Even then, with capped limit betting and big bets of just 600, it’s still pretty hard to get a 30k stack into the middle at this stage.

First-Ever TORSE to Run in Alberta

2025 WSOPC Calgary #2 Event #7: TORSE ($695 + $105)
Date: Oct 5, 3 PM Blinds: 40 Minutes Starting Stack: 30k Late Entry: 9 Levels (~9:45 PM) Day 1 Ends: End of Level 12 (~Midnight) The 3rd game on Sunday marks the first-ever running of a TORSE game in Alberta. TORSE is a modernized version of the HORSE rotation, but instead of starting off with limit hold ’em, the opening round is triple draw deuce to seven. Otherwise, the rest of the HORSE rotation stays the same.
Day 1 action kicks off at 3 PM on Sunday, and there are 9 levels of entry. That should put the last chance to enter at about 9:45 PM, and they’ll only play three more levels until they bag up for Day 2 at the end of Level 12, about midnight.
Players start with 30k in chips, and play 40-minute levels throughout the game.

Chris Alcindor, Winner of the HORSE, with KKPoker mates on the rail There was no TORSE game in January, but the more traditional HORSE game got 113 entries for prizes of $78,535. KKPoker rep Chris Alcindor took it down over Zach Nicholls.
It’s very likely I won’t catch any of the action for this one, at least on Sunday’s Day 1. I’ll be focusing on the Day 2 play on Monday as my main game, but Sunday has two other games in line before Day 1 of this one, so I’ll probably only get some numbers and the final stacks in for this game.

Level: 23 (10000/10000/40000, 20000/40000, 40000/80000) Entries: 5/95 Prizes: $66,025 2-7

Level: 21 (5000/13000/25000, 13000/25000, 25000/50000) Entries: 5/95 Prizes: $66,025 Stud 8

Horak Has Aces Up
Level: 21 (5000/13000/25000, 13000/25000, 25000/50000) Entries: 5/95 Prizes: $66,025 Stud

Level: 20 (5000/5000/20000, 10000/20000, 20000/40000) Entries: 7/95 Prizes: $66,025 Stud 8

Level: 18 (3000/3000/12000, 6000/12000, 12000/24000) Entries: 11/95 Prizes: $66,025 Triple Draw Deuce

13 Left in TORSE, Teliani Still Leading

The stacks are approximate counts as the action is still ongoing, but there’s a break in about 25 minutes, and I’ll get exact stacks then.
Nathan McCarty was the most recent exit from the game, in 14th place for $1,578.

Nu Teliani Leads 34 Returning TORSE Players
