The opening act of Calgary’s Summer Super Stack belonged to the veterans. A field of 171 seniors filled the Deerfoot Inn & Casino poker room, and by the time chips were bagged, one player stood head and shoulders above the rest. Graham Lupton arrived at the final table with a mountain of chips and never let go. In fact, he controlled more than half of the chips still in play when the last five players sat down.

Even with such an advantage, Lupton still offered his heads‑up opponent, Mervin Tumak, a $1,000 ICM adjustment to lock up the title. The gesture trimmed Lupton’s payday to $11,428 but guaranteed him the trophy, which he proudly posed with alongside a picture of his recently departed dog. Tumak’s good fortune from the deal pushed his take‑home to $8,529. Brothers Julius and Phillip Roque both snagged final‑table seats, giving the family double bragging rights.

$230 NLH: first-timers and family ties
The second event of the day, the $230 NLH was no less entertaining. With 126 entries and a $24,539 prize pool, it looked like a grind until the late hours when Jim Berry and Ryan Truong decided enough was enough. Moments after Alicia Dodds bowed out in third, the pair agreed to an ICM chop, splitting the money almost evenly. Berry held a slight chip edge, so the official victory (and $6,501) went his way—a remarkable feat considering he has just three recorded cashes to his name. Truong, meanwhile, locked up $4,662, which is roughly ten times his previous best tournament result.

Earlier action included Dodds’ unfortunate tumble from chip leader to bronze finish when she shoved pocket twos into Truong’s pocket tens and he flopped a set. Truong had already pulled off a key double with pocket fives against Berry’s ace‑king, while Shane Brotherwood’s pocket queens were cracked by Berry’s ace‑nine. Tyler Bourassa was the next to go after play relocated to the poker room, and the parade of bust‑outs continued with Chris Hedderson (6th), Chris Duffy (7th), Sabeh Nas (8th), and John Phan (9th) all having fell prior. Not to be outdone by the Roque brothers, Ryan’s cousin Andy Truong also made the payout list in 11th place, keeping things in the family.
