DJ Sharma Laughs His Way to His First Trophy in Event #8: $230 NLH

You’d be hard pressed to find a local tournament player who hasn’t bumped elbows with DJ Sharma. His enthusiastic “Sharma Time” catchphrase has a certain ring to it that is undeniable. Well, Sharma proved it was his time as he stomped through the 83-player field to win his first PPT trophy. For his effort, Sharma was rewarded with the $5,510 top prize from the $15,770 prize pool.
Sharma’s tourney life was on the line with seven players remaining, but he found running spades with 8♠3♠. Sharma found an elimination on Daryl Roberts to gain more of a stack, and Zachary York found the same on Stefan Maloney to bring the tournament to five-handed play. Sharma showed he was just heating up as he found another elimination this time on Stacey Deiderich. With this he gained the chip lead at roughly 900,000 chips.
His run continued as he won a flip with pocket sevens against Pat Wilson’s big slick. Soon after, he eliminated the short stacked Brad Stevens as his flush draw bricked out. York doubled after getting it all in with pocket eights against Sharma’s ace-ten. The flop seemed disastrous as the window was an ace. Yet an eight was hiding beneath to bring York to an even stack as Sharma.
However, Sharma’s unrelenting aggression put York on the back foot by the next break. Shortly after, he moved all in with an open-ended straight draw. The board bricked for Sharma’s pair to hold and to give him his first-ever tournament trophy.
