Taghavi Gets Second Trophy, Sharma Gets Another Second

Shawn Taghavi, Winner of the 6-Max

Tuesday was a big day at the Pure Poker Tour, featuring Day 2 of the 6-Max game as well as an evening PLO Bounty. Ten players from the original 77 entries returned for in-the-money play on Day 2, while 121 four-card fans showed up for the late PLO side game.

Tuesday’s action marked the continuation of a couple of streaks here at PPT #3. Shawn Taghavi grabbed his second trophy of the series, while DJ Sharma continued his stellar week with a third runner-up finish in the PLO Bounty game.

Taghavi Scores #2

Shawn Taghavi is having a pretty good week here on the Pure Poker Tour. On the opening day, he rode a wave all the way through to the top spot in the opening Seniors game for his first PPT trophy. He’s picked up a couple of other wins in Pure facilities, including a DSPT Seniors event in 2019 and a Monthly earlier this month right here at Pure Casino Edmonton.

He’s got plenty of final table results from previous series, but hadn’t managed to make it through to the top spot of the podium in a series event prior to this one. Now, he has two PPT trophies to his name after bagging the win in the 6-Max game on Tuesday.

He brought the second biggest stack into the final day, trailing Curtis Singleton by about 100k. Singleton had a horrendous day, however, quipping to me that he hadn’t won a hand all day as he was collecting his things. The biggest damage for Singleton came with an underflush that left him on fumes before he hit the rail in 8th place on the final table bubble.

That left Taghavi in charge, but it wasn’t a smooth run to the finish line. Matt Klapstein was pretty much always nipping at his heels, and the two players traded the chip lead throughout most of the final table.

When it got down to four ways, Ben Grenier and Michael St Pierre-Porter were the shorties, and neither could find more chips. Grenier grabbed a double from St Pierre-Porter to jump to 3rd in the stacks, but then immediately gave it back to Matt Klapstein in the next hand to bust fourth. St Pierre-Porter followed shortly after in third to set up heads up between Klapstein and Taghavi.

Taghavi had the lead to start heads up, and never relinquished it. Heads up was a quick affair that only lasted a few hands. In the final confrontation, Klapstein flopped two pair and the money went in with Taghavi behind on top pair. That changed on the turn as Taghavi hit the bigger two and then held through the river to take down the title.

Taghavi had about $150k in earnings coming into this event, and this will add about another $10k USD to his total.

Michael Legacy Wins PLO Bounty a Year to the Day After 1st & Only Hendon Cash

It was the night for some interesting milestones in the PLO Bounty game on Tuesday. DJ Sharma put on another amazing run to find his thrd final table and third runner-up finish so far this series, and 3rd place Lynn Norris booked her second live cash and biggest score, but winner Michael Legacy also had a fascinating stat after the win.

According to Hendon Mob, Legacy booked his first and only live poker cash on July 23, 2024, at last year’s PPT #3 played here at Pure Casino Edmonton. That score was worth $1,130 for 7th place in Event #2, and exactly one year, to the day later, he bagged up a win in the same casino at the same series.

Legacy mostly played a methodical waiting game on the final table, content to watch the flashier Sharma run over the rest of the field. Sharma ended his day with 22 bounties, at least 5 of which came from the final table alone, as he was a wrecking ball throughout the game.

Legacy did his own damage, however, pocketing 17 bounties on his way to the win.
