It was a Day 2 that went nearly 17 hours from the opening until Chase Bonertz was sitting with all the chips. The six-handed play went on for nearly four hours, with Bonertz and 4th place finisher George Yang holding big stacks and handcuffing the other four, who were all jockeying for ladders.
Yang was the leader by a large margin when they got to six ways around 10 PM. That’s when things ground to a halt. it took three full levels of play to get the next exit when Romualdo Cusano doubled up fellow short-stacker Scot Munro, then had to get his final 135k in (with blinds at 40k/80k/80k) under the gun to avoid being forced all in from the big blind.
Once Cusano was out, Bonertz started to gain momentum. He chipped up in a hand against his eventual heads-up opponent, Dave S, giving Bonertz more than 4 million.
He was still trailing Yang, however, and it was soon to be four-handed after Scot Munro exited his fourth final table of the series in fifth place for $25,317, sending his chips to Dave. Dave then won a huge pot from George Yang when he flopped a set of sixes against Yang’s sevens. On a six-high board with straight outs for Yang, he shoved, but couldn’t get there against Dave’s set.
Shariq “Sharqy” Khan quickly followed when his pocket sixes couldn’t fade a river king for Dave, and that set up the heads-up battle with Bonertz. Bonertz started heads-up with an 8:5 lead, but that quickly changed as he seemed to go completely card dead.
There were very few showdowns, but Dave chipped up with relentless aggression, forcing Bonertz to leave dead money in the pot. That’s when Bonertz found some life again. He got his final 2.155 million in with ace-seven when he called off a shove with Dave holding king-ten suited and the ace held for a double to stay alive. He was still behind, but the chips went in again shortly after, when Dave woke up with kings.
Bonertz found an ace with ace-four to crack Dave’s kings and take a huge lead. He had more than 10 million when the final hand was played. Dave had ace-king against fours for Bonertz, and Dave called Bonertz’s shove. The fours held, and Bonertz had all the chips.
Both of the final two were railed for much of the evening by their girlfriends, or in Bonertz’ case, his fiancée. I have to think that almost $95k will make a pretty decent wedding present.
