Shortly after the start of heads-up play, Tal Barasofsky picked up a small pot to take the lead, but it didn’t last for long.
Veli-Pekka Penttinen opened to 500,000 with Q♣3♣, and Barasofsky defended with K♣4♦.
The flop came 6♣9♠8♣, giving Penttinen a flush draw. Barasofsky check-called a 525,000 continuation bet.
The turn brought the 3♥, pairing Penttinen’s three and giving him the lead. After Barasofsky checked again, the Finn fired 1.8 million into a pot of 2.3 million. Barasofsky wasn’t convinced and made the call with just King-high.
The river was the A♥, and Barasofsky checked for a third time. Penttinen, with only a bottom pair, went for a half-pot (value) bet. It initially looked like Barasofsky might just be Hollywooding before folding, but after a long tank, he made the hero call with king-high, trying to pick off a bluff.
Honestly, that could be the case with the Penttinen’s pair of threes, but it was still good enough to take the pot down, pushing him to nearly a 2:1 chip lead.
Veli-Pekka Penttinen: 20,000,000
Tal Barasofsky: 11,000,000
