Seamus McGearty

Seamus McGearty was always behind the 8-Ball in this heads-up match. The match started with Adam Cygman playing 11.2 million of the 14 million in play, so it would take a few doubles for McGearty to close the gap.

Two-handed play went for much of Level 30, and a good part of Level 31 as well, with nothing but small pots back and forth for each player. At one point, McGearty was able to chip up to around 4 million, but it all came down to a huge hand where both players flopped an ace.

I missed the preflop and flop action, but with the board reading K3AQ on the turn, Cygman bet 1 million and McGearty called. The river was the 2 and Cygman shoved, sending McGearty deep into the tank. He counted out his stack, muttering to himself, until he finally said “Gotta go with me gut” in his thick Irish accent.

He put in the rest of his chips for a call, and his gut was sort of on point. He had ace-four, which was a better ace than Cygman’s — at least until his deuce kicker hit the river. That gave Cygman two pair and the win, while McGearty had to settle for second tonight.
