It was an epic battle from three ways, with three of the top PLO players locally finding the top three spots. Defending Champion Nicholas Lee (soon to be Dr. Nick in about 18 months), Teo Sanchez (who won the NLH/PLO mix here in April), and Skyler York (who has 5-card and 4-card PLO wins on his resume) were the final three, and if you put together a list of five players to expect at the end of this game, it’s pretty likely these three would have been on the list.
The heads-up battle between Sanchez and York was nearly 90 minutes long, with York as a bit of a “cockroach”. He was down to fumes more than once in the game, and Sanchez held the lead for a lot of the HU play, but no matter how short York got, he found a way to rebuild.
In the final confrontation, it was all in preflop, with York on the weaker hand. He was playing Q♣9♦6♠4♥ against Q♦10♠8♦6♣. The 2♥9♠A♠2♦K♥ board gave York the pair of nines while leaving Sanchez high and dry. This was York’s 3rd win, and the cash will come in 3rd on his list of top scores.
