Wednesday was another big day at the 2024 WPT World Championship at the Wynn Las Vegas as players battled not only in the $10,400 buy-in WPT World Championship but many other events, including three Championship events in the two-day $1,100 WPT Seniors Championship, the $2 million guaranteed $3,000 NLH, and the two-day $25,800 WPT Alpha 8.
The WPT World Championship attracted a banner field of 2,392 entries, creating a massive $23,441,600 prize pool. Just 61 players remain to start Day 4 on Thursday at Noon, with Michael Berk resuming the action with the chip lead after doubling his stack through Mark Seif in the most classic of coin flips when his ace-king connected for two pair on the flop to win the hand.
Meanwhile, big slick didn’t work out too well for this author. A story will come out about my adventures after the trip, but as a spoiler I ran ace-king into cowboys about 40 players off the money to hit the rail empty-handed. Meanwhile, Julio Delgado Reyes bagged the overnight chip lead with 117 players remaining in the money in this epic event which attracted 939 entries for a huge $906,135 prize pool.
Samson Yu led the way of the 63 survivors from the 507 entries getting into the mix on Day 1a of the $3,000 NLH after bagging up 702,000. Day 1b kicks off on Thursday at Noon.
The $25,800 WPT Alpha 8 attracted some of the bigger names in poker. Shannon Shorr led the way among the 22 survivors, with 111 entries entering the mix to create a $2,775,000 prize pool.
Three Champions Club Members Remain in WPT World Championship
Wednesday’s Day 3 began with 299 hopefuls in the money for at least a $19,600 min-cash for nearly double the $10,400 boasted at the 2024 WPT World Championship at the Wynn Las Vegas.
Australia’s Malcolm Trayner began the day with the chip lead but won’t be bringing the massive trophy and the $3,138,900 top prize back to the Land Down Under after exiting in 84th place for $42,000, just after 2014 WSOP Main Event champion Martin Jacobson hit the rail.
Michael Berk ended the evening with a bang, stealing away the chip lead from Mark Seif in a massive double-up to end the day with 8,110,000 in chips, which will be good for 101 big blinds to start Day 4 with the 90-minute blind levels beginning at 40,000/80,000 with an 80,000 big blind ante to start the day.
Serhii Popovych (7,945,000) didn’t end the day that far behind Berk, with 2024 WPT Prime champion Fabian Gumz (7,165,000) and Joshua Lisberger (7,155,000) also ending Day 3 with more than 7 million in chips.
Three players from the exclusive Champions Club remain in the 2024 WPT World Championship. The Champions Club is reserved for those who have won the marquee event during the over two decades of the World Poker Tour, starting with when poker legend Gus Hansen defeated another poker legend in John Juanda heads-up to win the 2002 WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic for $556,460. Hansen’s legendary WPT status didn’t end there as after winning the 2003 WPT L.A. Poker Classic for $532,490, Hansen became the first two-time WPT champion. He also became the first three-time champion after winning the 2004 WPT PokerStars Caribbean Poker Adventure for $455,780. Meanwhile, Darren Elias eventually dusted away those records after becoming the first and only four-time champion at the World Poker Tour.
The 2014 WPT L.A. Poker Classic champion Chris Moorman will start Day 4 in the best position of those seeking a second major WPT title with 5,345,000 with 2016 WPT Caribbean champion Niall “Firaldo” Farrell (2,270,000) and WPT Venice Carnival champion Andrea Dato (2,060,000) will start with short stacks but still enough breathing room for a chance at the final table and beyond.
