NBA 2026/27 Season Preview with Biggest Trades and Title Predictions
Philadelphia 76ers – LeBron James

The NBA returns on October 20 after a summer that has changed the championship picture. Several of the league’s biggest names have moved, Philadelphia has assembled a new superteam, and the New York Knicks begin their title defence with considerably more competition in the Eastern Conference.

LeBron James and Jaylen Brown are now teammates in Philadelphia, while Giannis Antetokounmpo has joined Miami. Kawhi Leonard is back in Toronto, Ja Morant has moved to Portland, and LaMelo Ball will share Minnesota’s backcourt with Anthony Edwards.

There is plenty to work out before we know which of those moves will deliver. Some teams have added extraordinary talent, while others are relying on the chemistry they already have. With the opening games upon us, here is our look at the contenders, the players to watch and the odds that catch our attention.

New York Returns with a Championship to Defend

The New York Knicks deserve to be the starting point. Last season’s champions have kept their main group together, giving them a valuable advantage over rivals still working out how their new pieces fit.

Continuity rarely attracts as much attention as a superstar signing. Over a long season, however, knowing who takes the important shots, how to defend together and what works under playoff pressure can be just as valuable.

New York already has those answers. There will be difficult stretches, and defending a championship brings its own demands, but the Knicks belong firmly among the title favourites. Anyone hoping to take their place will have to beat a team that knows how to finish the job.

Philadelphia Builds the East’s Most Intriguing Team

No team has changed the conversation quite like the Philadelphia 76ers.

Adding LeBron James and Jaylen Brown gives Philadelphia an extraordinary collection of talent alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. Paul George has gone in the opposite direction to Boston, but after his injury problems, the Sixers will hope their new arrivals can offer both greater availability and a higher ceiling.

The appeal is obvious. LeBron can organise an offence and control a game, Brown brings scoring and physicality on the wing, and Embiid remains a nightmare matchup when healthy. Maxey gives them another source of scoring and the speed to punish teams before their defence is set.

Making all of that work together is the challenge. There is only one ball, and finding the right balance will take more than putting famous names in the same starting lineup.

Embiid’s health could decide how far this team goes. If he stays available and Philadelphia finds that balance, we would put the Sixers right alongside New York at the top of the Eastern Conference conversation.

Boston, Miami and Toronto Have Something to Prove

Boston enters a different era after exchanging Brown for Paul George. Replacing an established star is a significant assignment, and George will need to contribute consistently at both ends alongside Jayson Tatum.

With Tatum back leading the team, Boston still has the talent to compete. Nikola Vučević’s departure also changes the frontcourt, though, making this a season in which familiar expectations meet a noticeably different roster. How quickly the Celtics settle will be worth watching.

Toronto has turned to someone who already knows what it takes to win there. Kawhi Leonard’s return inevitably brings back memories of the championship he helped deliver, but this season will depend on what he can provide now. A healthy Leonard makes the Raptors a much more difficult playoff opponent.

Miami’s move for Giannis Antetokounmpo could be just as consequential. His ability to cover ground, protect the basket and overwhelm opponents physically gives the Heat the potential to build one of the league’s strongest defences. At the other end, his pressure on the rim changes the way teams have to guard them.

Detroit and Cleveland should remain part of this discussion too. Both retain important foundations, even with changes around them, and neither needs the attention of a blockbuster signing to be dangerous.

The West has often looked like the deeper conference. This year, the East has a much stronger argument.

Oklahoma City and San Antonio Lead the Western Race

The two teams at the front of the championship market are Oklahoma City and San Antonio, and there are good reasons for both.

The Thunder have built their success around more than Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s scoring. Their depth, defensive pressure and ability to maintain a high level across different lineups have made them exceptionally difficult to beat.

Some important supporting pieces have moved on, so that depth will face a fresh test. Even so, Oklahoma City still has the foundation of a championship contender and a leader capable of deciding the biggest games.

San Antonio has already experienced the other side of a Finals run. Last season’s defeat should give a young team a clearer understanding of how demanding those final steps can be.

San Antonio Spurs – Victor Wembanyama

Victor Wembanyama is central to everything the Spurs want to achieve. His defensive influence is already enormous, and further progress offensively would make San Antonio an even tougher proposition. Alongside Gilgeous-Alexander, he belongs near the front of the MVP discussion.

Tobias Harris adds veteran experience to the group, although a calf injury will keep him out of the opener. The bigger question is how much the Spurs have learned from last season and whether they can apply it when the pressure returns.

Minnesota Adds Creativity as Luka Takes Charge in Los Angeles

Minnesota’s new backcourt could be one of the most entertaining in the league. LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards offer a combination of passing, shooting and attacking ability that should give opposing defences plenty to think about.

Ball can help create easier opportunities for Edwards, while Edwards gives Minnesota someone who can take over when the game slows down. Turning that promise into consistent winning basketball will be the test, but expectations should be high.

In Los Angeles, there is no longer any doubt about whose team this is. With LeBron gone, Luka Dončić becomes the clear focal point of the Lakers.

Minnesota Timberwolves – Anthony Edwards | Los Angeles Lakers – Luka Dončić

The Lakers have added Walker Kessler from Utah. His arrival gives Dončić an appealing partner around the basket and should help address the team’s need for rim protection.

Luka has already shown how effectively he can work with a centre who finishes above the rim. Add Austin Reaves’ scoring and secondary playmaking, and there is a promising offensive foundation.

The Lakers’ ceiling will depend on the supporting cast. They need reliable shooting, defensive effort and useful contributions when Dončić sits. If those pieces come together, they could be considerably more dangerous than their championship odds suggest.

Jokić and Curry Still Demand Respect

It is difficult to discuss contenders without leaving room for Nikola Jokić.

Denver always has a chance to compete at the highest level while its offence runs through him. His passing creates opportunities that other teams cannot manufacture, and his scoring makes it difficult to take those options away. The Nuggets’ supporting players will matter, but Jokić remains the reason nobody should welcome a playoff series against Denver.

The same caution applies to Stephen Curry and Golden State. Curry can change the direction of a series in a few minutes, and the Warriors still have the experience to make life uncomfortable for more fancied opponents.

Jimmy Butler’s recovery is an important part of their outlook. If Golden State reaches the postseason healthy, writing them off would be a mistake.

Morant’s arrival in Portland adds another compelling story in the West. A fresh setting gives him an opportunity to reassert himself, and the Blazers should be considerably more interesting to follow with him running the offence.

NBA Championship Odds and Our Early Picks

At the prices we are assessing, Oklahoma City is 3.50 and San Antonio is 3.70 to win the championship. Both deserve their position, but our attention also goes to teams further down the market.

Philadelphia at 10.00 is the most interesting alternative. There are real questions about health and chemistry, but the Sixers have enough individual quality to compete with anyone if those concerns are resolved. Our interest rests on Embiid staying healthy and the new lineup developing a workable balance.

Miami at 31.00 is another interesting option. Giannis Antetokounmpo gives the Heat a player who can dominate at both ends, while Erik Spoelstra has a reputation for finding the right roles for his players and making the pieces work together. Building around Giannis gives him plenty to work with. If Miami develops the defensive identity we expect, it could become a very difficult team to beat over a playoff series.

For a longer shot, the Lakers at 36.00 stand out. This is a more speculative selection, with plenty depending on how the rebuilt roster performs. Still, Dončić gives Los Angeles a player capable of controlling a playoff series, and the changes around him offer a plausible route to improvement.

In the MVP market, Giannis Antetokounmpo at 13.00 is worth considering. His influence at both ends gives him a strong foundation for an award campaign. If his arrival turns Miami into one of the East’s leading teams, he should be firmly in the conversation.

The Rookie of the Year market offers another interesting possibility in Darius Acuff Jr. at 13.00. He is our early outsider to watch, with his chances likely to depend on how much playing time and responsibility he earns during his first NBA season. Opening Night Brings an Immediate Test

The season begins on Tuesday, October 20, with Boston visiting Detroit at 9 pm CEST.

Philadelphia visits New York at 1 am CEST on Wednesday, October 21. Oklahoma City then faces San Antonio at 3.30 am CEST.

The meeting at Madison Square Garden is our main focus. The defending champions welcome a Philadelphia team that has spent the summer changing expectations, making it an ideal first look at how the new Eastern Conference might take shape.

Our opening night lean is over 225.5 total points in Knicks vs 76ers.

New York brings an established offence, while Philadelphia has several players capable of creating scoring opportunities without needing a perfectly executed possession. We expect both teams to have opportunities to put points on the board, particularly while the Sixers are still developing their defensive understanding.

There is room for early season rust, and Philadelphia’s new lineup may need time to find its rhythm. Even with that uncertainty, the offensive talent makes the over our preferred angle for this matchup.
