GGPoker Launches Ocean KO: The Jackpot PKO Format That Changes Every Knockout

GGPoker has launched Ocean KO, its own take on the jackpot progressive knockout format that has taken French poker by storm.

The world’s biggest real-money online poker site is the first to bring the format outside France and Spain, and the debut Sunday schedule confirmed the appetite is real: three tournaments cleared their guarantees, with the $100 buy-in drawing 5,926 entries for a $545,192 prize pool and the $1,000 buy-in generating $657,400 from 692 entries. Ocean KO offers bounty multipliers up to 400x, and the reception leaves little doubt the format is here to stay.

What Is Ocean KO?

Ocean KO is GGPoker’s version of the jackpot PKO, a format pioneered by French giant Winamax as Space KO. The mechanics start like any progressive knockout tournament: half your buy-in sits on your head as a bounty. In a $10 event, that means a $5 bounty. Knock someone out and you win their bounty: half goes to you in cash, and half gets added to the bounty on your own head.

The twist that separates Ocean KO from a standard PKO is what happens when you make that knockout. Instead of collecting a fixed amount, you spin a random multiplier. That multiplier is applied to the bounty you just won before the cash is paid out.

So if a $5 bounty lands a 10x multiplier, it’s suddenly worth $50. You pocket $25 in cash, and your own bounty jumps by the other $25, making you a more attractive target. Hit the jackpot at 400x and that $5 bounty becomes $2,000: $1,000 paid to you in cash, plus a $1,005 bounty now sitting on your head.

The Ocean KO Pay Table

Here is the full multiplier breakdown for a $10 buy-in, with a $5 starting bounty.

$10 buy-in | $5 starting bounty

MultiplierBounty ValueCash to PlayerProbability
400x$2,000$1,0000.002%
100x$500$2500.08%
10x$50$252.40%
2x$10$52.50%
1.5x$7.50$3.752.70%
1x$5$2.5020.00%
0.7x$3.50$1.7522.00%
0.5x$2.50$1.2526.23%
0.4x$2$124.09%

On average, the multipliers work out to exactly 1x, so in the long run a bounty is worth exactly its face value. The variance, though, is enormous: more than 72 percent of knockouts pay out below the bounty’s face value, but a 10x or better lands roughly once every 40 knockouts, compared to once every 167 on Winamax’s Space KO.

How Ocean KO Compares to the Originals

GGPoker is only the third operator in the world to offer the jackpot PKO format, after Winamax and France’s Betclic, which launched its own version, Smash KO, in March 2026. Neither format has ever been available outside ring-fenced European markets, making Ocean KO the first chance for most online poker players to experience it.

GGPoker has made one significant design choice that sets Ocean KO apart from both predecessors: a much higher frequency of big hits, paired with an even higher frequency of sub-1x outcomes. The 400x top multiplier dwarfs the 100x ceiling on Space KO and the 50x ceiling on Smash KO. Mechanically, it is more volatile in both directions.

For players, that means more small knockouts, a better shot at a life-changing bounty, and less in between. Every knockout is a spin, and the spin table here is wilder than anything previously on the market.

Evolution Tiers: Know Your Target

To help players quickly see who is carrying a big bounty at the table, GGPoker has added 14 “evolution tiers.” Every player begins the tournament as an Anchovy. As their bounty grows through accumulated knockouts, they progress through a series of increasingly dangerous sea creatures. A player sitting at the top tier is a walking jackpot, and the whole table knows it at a glance.

The system means you can become a target at any table in just a few hands, even at the smallest buy-in levels, if the random multipliers break your way early.

What the Pros Are Saying

Recreational players will love Ocean KO. The jackpot spin element turns every knockout into a moment, and the possibility of a 400x multiplier on a single bounty is exactly the kind of lottery-ticket excitement that drives recreational engagement. The format is built to feel like a slot machine attached to a poker tournament, and for a player who plays for fun, that is a feature, not a bug.

The professional poker player view is more complicated. The math is neutral: since the multiplier table averages out to exactly 1x, the expected value of every bounty is identical to a standard PKO. But EV and variance are different, and Ocean KO’s variance is enormous.

More than 72 percent of all bounties pay out below face value, and the big hits that balance the equation are rare and unpredictable. For a professional grinding a volume-based strategy, the short-term swings are significantly larger than in any other PKO format on the market.

That variance has a second-order effect that goes beyond the individual player. Patrick Leonard, one of the most respected voices in online poker, flagged the issue bluntly when Ocean KO launched, noting that the format creates serious complications for staking and backing arrangements.

When stakers and horses split the action in a standard PKO, results are volatile but manageable over a sample. In a jackpot PKO at Ocean KO’s extreme settings, a single tournament can swing a backed player’s results dramatically in either direction based on a few spin outcomes unrelated to their play. Separating skill from luck becomes significantly harder, and managing ROI expectations between stakers and players becomes, in Leonard’s own words, “very very very messy.”

That is a real tension the format will have to navigate. Whether it is a dealbreaker for the professional ecosystem or simply a new reality professionals adapt to remains to be seen. The recreational players driving Ocean KO’s first-week numbers are not staking anyone, and they are not worried about long-run EV. They are here for the spin.

And if professionals do follow Leonard’s lead and gravitate away from the format, that outcome may not concern GGPoker at all. Ocean KO looks designed to create exactly the kind of recreational table environment the site has consistently built its traffic around. Not every format on a poker site needs to maximize the ROI of top professionals, and a game that recreational players actively seek out, with minimal competition from high-volume grinders, may be a more profitable product for the operator than a balanced field ever would be.

Why This Format Has the Industry’s Attention

The jackpot PKO format has already produced some extraordinary results in France. Last month, a player won a record €922,000 in bounties alone in a single Winamax Space KO event, in under four and a half hours of play, after an €80,000 guaranteed tournament paid out more than 10 times its guarantee. That result alone explains why every major operator is watching this format closely.

GGPoker is unlikely to be the last to make the move. iPoker and the Winning Poker Network, among others, are reportedly monitoring the format, and if Ocean KO’s early numbers hold, pressure on global online operators to follow will only grow. The format has already shifted from a French curiosity to a global conversation in less than a year. GGPoker has just opened it to more players than any operator ever has, and the rest of the industry is watching closely for what comes next.
