Opening day at the Deerfoot Inn & Casino Summer Super Stack is now in the books, with the first two events crowning winners on Wednesday evening. The opening day featured the Seniors event to start things off early in the day, with the $230 NLH starting at 6 PM and running until after 3 AM.
Almost $62.5k in prizes have already been awarded on the first day, but that number is sure to grow significantly through the series, with the Thursday prizes almost certain to push that total well over $100k. In the end, there should be more than $1 million handed out during the 12 days of Summer poker action.
Glenn Slater Bags the Seniors Win

Event #1: $340 Seniors ($300 + $40)
The 50+ crowd kicked off the 2026 Summer Super Stack, and it was a pretty big start. 131 seniors came out for the game, generating a prize pool of $37,225, with almost $10k up top for the winner.
The game played pretty quickly, but they were still at the tables for around 14 hours, with the final hand coming at about 1 AM. Glenn Slater turned up the heat as the final table got shorter, amassing a huge stack for heads-up against Bill Thomson.
For his part, Thomson was looking to continue his streak in local Seniors events, after winning 3 50+ games in the last year, as well as a few extra cashes. He had a mountain to climb, however, getting to heads-up against Slater with only about 500k of the 3.2 million in play.
In the final hand, Slater called off a shove from Thomson, with Thomson’s ace-king way ahead of jack-eight suited for Slater. Slater found a jack on the flop to take the lead, and Thomson couldn’t catch up.

Austen Dao Takes the First Open Win of the Series

Event #2: $230 NLH ($205 + $25)
The side game on Opening Day was the first open-entry event of the series, the $230 NLH. The game drew a solid field of 129 entries, for prizes of more than $25k.
With 20-minute blinds, the game played out as a bit of a turbo, with the final hand coming about 9.5 hours after the first hands were dealt. The final table played equally fast, with the field going from the bubble to 7-handed in less than an hour.
It took another hour to get the game 4-way, then the final hour to play down to the winner. Karin Schulenborg was the next out in 4th place, with Jarret Gray following about 15 minutes later.
That left winner Austen Dao and Quinn Kannekens heads up for the win, and they played about 45 minutes (including a move from Chrome to poker) before Dao took it down in a very close hand at about 3:30 AM.
It came down to a single pip at the end, after both players flopped a king. Dao had the slightly better kicker, but after a queen came on the turn, Kannekens was calling for a chop with another high card. The 4♥ river wasn’t what he needed, and Dao’s kicker pipped him by one spot for the win.
