Once play got four-handed, they played a few hands, but ultimately decided to cut a deal. Francis Fan was the player to bring it up, while he had the second stack, and he suggested ICM.

After running the numbers, and a bit of a discussion amongst the four, they agreed to the straight ICM chop. Khairuddin Akbari was in the lead and secured $5,102. Fan got $4,643, Patrick Michaud took $3,716, and Jamie Omeasoo got $3,403. Once the deal was agreed to, they ended the night with Akbari taking the title.

    Naleen Narayan

Khairuddin Akbari limped in from the small blind, then called when Naleen Narayan raised it to 42k. They both checked the J♦A♦J♠ flop, and Narayan called a bet of [invalid notations] turn.

On the 4♣ river, Akbari bet 75k, then called when Narayan shoved. Narayan’s ace-queen was no good against the jack-deuce of hearts for Akbari.

  • Michaud Shoves the Flop

    Level:17 (5000/10000/10000)
    Entries:5/68
    Prizes:$19,380
    Local Time:12:30 AM

Patrick Michaud made it 50k to go early, and it folded to Francis Fan in the big blind. “That means you don’t have a very big hand,” Fan mused.

“That depends what you call a very big hand,” replied Michaud.

“Not kings or queens. Feels like king-jack,” Fan added as he slid in the call, then checked the 8♥Q♣9♦ flop. Michaud shoved, and Fan let out a big sigh. He muttered to himself, musing about king-queen, and finally mucked.

Michaud showed pocket jacks, adding “Not kings or queens.”

    “Good shove,” replied Fan.

  • Brian Wells Out in 6th Place for $775

Wells flopped a gutshot to Broadway with 2♠J♥A♣ and he called for the king to complete his straight. He got it on the river, but unfortunately, the ace had already paired on the turn, which meant Wells’ Broadway card also gave Omeasoo the boat for the win.

  • Ben Grenier Out in 7th Place for $580

Patrick Michaud limped in from the hijack before Ben Grenier shoved 87k from the button. It folded back to Michaud, and he called after a count.

Grenier was dominating with ace-queen into king-queen, but Michaud found a king on the flop to pull ahead, and held for the win.

  • The Oct. 7 Hearing That Could Change Everything for Canadian Online Poker

    Supreme Court of Canada
    Supreme Court of Canada

On Oct. 7, the Supreme Court of Canada will hear oral arguments in a case that could determine whether Ontario and Alberta’s regulated poker markets are allowed to share player pools with international operators like PokerStars and GGPoker. No ruling will come that day, but the arguments made by both sides will shape the direction of Canadian online poker for years, and almost no one in the poker media is talking about it.

The stakes only grow when paired with what happens two days earlier: Quebec’s Oct. 5 provincial election, where the two front-running parties have each pledged to end Loto-Québec’s online gaming monopoly and license private operators. Between a Supreme Court decision on cross-border liquidity and a possible third province joining the fold, Canada could be on the verge of a domestic poker pool approaching 30 million players, or locked into its current fractured setup indefinitely.
