  • Shawn Johnson Wins Event #1 for $28,013

Shawn Johnson was the big stack through much of the final table, though Victor Ma and Eric Vansteelandt also competed for that title throughout the night. In the end, Johnson was able to hold his stack, even as short-stack Henry Friesen wouldn’t die.

Friesen ended up heads up with Johnson after being the short stack at 130k with 8 players left, just a couple of big blinds. Johnson made short work of heads up, however, coming in with about a 4:1 lead. Johnson bagged his first ring tonight, along with more than $28k.

  • Henry Friesen Out in 2nd Place for $18,337

    Level:31 (100000/250000/250000)

    Henry Friesen

Henry Friesen had a great run today, sitting on the short stack for most of the final table, but still managing to get to heads up. Once they got two-ways, he fell to Shawn Johnson, who was a big stack through most of the FT.

  • Friesen Makes Big Fold?

    Level:31 (100000/250000/250000)
    Entries:2/404
    Prizes:$134,071

Henry Friesen opened the button to 500k and Shawn Johnson called from the big blind. Johnson check-called for 500k on the 952 flop, and check-shoved the covering stack after Friesen fired 1 million on the Q turn.

The shove sent Friesen into the tank. “The only way you beat me with with the king or ace. Do you hae the king or the ace?” he asked, muttering to himself before finally mucking hand for a massive fold if, in fact, he has the jack of clubs as indicated.

  • Victor Ma Out in 3rd Place for $12,311

Henry Friesen shoved the button, and Shawn Johnson called from the small blind. Friesen was ahead with K7 against the suited gapper 64 for Johnson. • Eric Vansteelandt Out in 4th Place for $8,470

    Level:30 (100000/200000/200000)

    Entries:4/404
    Prizes:$134,071
    Local Time:1:20 AM

Henry Friesen got his last 1 million in with king-jack of spades, and Eric Vansteelandt called with jack-eight of diamonds. Friesen hit his king on the flop of 3K2A6, though Vansteelandt nearly flushed him out after turning the backdoor diamonds.

Shawn Johnson is leading with 4.5 million, Victor Ma has 3.4 million, Vansteelandt has 1.6 million, while Friesen is now playing 2.3 million, with the players on a break now.

Sukhpal Sihota Shoved for 1.2 million under the gun, and Shawn Johnson tank-called in the big blind with more. Sihota was on pocket eights against QJ for Johnson.

Johnson smashed the flop of the 10A3109 flop for the diamond flush, and sent Sihota to the rail for 5th place money.

Shawn Johnson raised the small blind to 325k, then called off when Sukhpal Sihota shoved the big for 730k. Sihota had pocket sevens against queen-deuce, and while Johnson found a duck on the flop, there was no more help and the sevens held to double Sihota back.

    Entries:16/404
    Prizes:$134,017
    Local Time:10:25 PM

Victor Ma opened to 100k under the gun, and Eric Vansteelandt called two seats to his left. Sukhpal Sihota then shoved from the middle, and it folded back to Ma, who called with more while Vansteelandt mucked his hand.

Ma had pocket sixes against ace-king, and while the board didn’t hit the big slick directly, the 275Q10 runout gave Sihota the club flush with the king of clubs.

During the deal, the dealer exposed the ace of clubs for Vo Nguyen, turning it into the burn card. Nguyen was short and almost certainly would have been in with the ace, hitting the best flush, but sometimes luck doesn’t run your way.

    Blinds:25 Minutes
    Starting Stack:30k
    Late Entry:10 Levels (3:40 PM)
    Day 1 Ends:One-Day Event

It’s time for the opening event of the 2026 WSOP-C Calgary Jan! Event #1 is the traditional opening game, the Big 30 Stack.

$400 gets a player 30k in chips, and levels will be 25 minutes long. The action gets going at 11 AM, with 10 levels of late entry. That will put the final entry chance at about 3:40 PM. This one-day event will then play down to a winner sometime late Wednesday night.

    E1 Winner Josh Molnar

In October, Winnipeg’s Josh Molnar took down this ring over a field of 371 entries. That gave him the best share of more than $122k in prizes, facing down Jacob Parent for the two biggest prizes at the end of the night.

The shove sent Friesen into the tank. “The only way you beat me with with the king or ace. Do you hae the king or the ace?” he asked, muttering to himself before finally mucking hand for a massive fold if, in fact, he has the jack of clubs as indicated.

  • Victor Ma Out in 3rd Place for $12,311
