The event saw a star studded field with former champions and record holders joining the field early. Pamela Belote was one of such players as she recently made WSOP Circuit history. Her 8th career ring was scored at the Choctaw Circuit Series one week prior and catapulted her into the Women’s record for most Circuit Rings. Also among the field was 2023 and 2024 Alberta Female Player of the Year Haven Taylor. She had some big hands early including a straight flush to find herself among the big stacks for the majority of the tournament.
Play slowed as the stone bubble approached hand for hand went into a break where players reset and came back hoping to make the money. Ngo ultimately led the field to the money as she took out her short stacked opponent forced all in with the blinds. She continued to knockout players as she soon after found an elimination with a made flush on the turn. Players were constantly at risk with stack depth shallowing as blinds raised. Taylor kept her tournament alive finding a two outer on the river with pocket fives.

The former back-back champion of this very event, Jenelle Exner found her tournament life on the line. She was all in with a suited ace against pocket jacks. Her continued success in this tournament wouldn’t end here as an ace on the turn secured the double up for her. Play entered the final table and soon after saw its first elimination in a cooler of big slick against the cowboys. Taylor was the next to fall as her jam ran into the premiums of ace king and pocket jacks. However, she was the first player to cash for four digits pulling in $1,036 for her efforts.
With many players sitting with under 10 big blinds, eliminations were rapid. Ngo found another elimination to near the chip lead with 590,000 chips in play. She continued to wake up with premiums as she caught an all in jam from Kali Shuali with ace king in the small blind. Ivanna Soya saw herself skyrocket to the chip lead as she found the next elimination and became the first player to cross the million chip threshhold. She held over 40 percent of the chips in play as four players remained.

Exner also picked up an elimination as she flopped the best against the short stacked Zeki Balic. Play entered three handed and luck seemed to favor Ngo. In a made for movie hand Ngo got it all in against Exner with pocket sevens against pocket eights. The flop came 5♦7♣6♦ to give Soya the lead with a sweat. The turn improved Exner to a straight as it peeled the 4♣. However, the river swung the odds for good as it completed the board with the 6♥.
Exner has had a pretty absurd run in the Ladies games here at WSOP-C in Calgary. She’s won the last two of these events on the trot and damn near made it three-for-three tonight until she ran into this cooler. With two wins and a 3rd place in this event, it’s a safe bet we’ll see her back for the October series. Heads up play continued in Ngo’s favor as she found a dominant chip lead applying pressure to the short stacked Soya.
Soya battle back doubling with slow played aces soon after and spurring her to 2:1 chip deficit. However this same hand would soon end her tournament life. She flopped the best of it with top set and Ngo jammed the turn with her backdoor flush draw. A club on the river sealed Soya’s fate for Ngo to take the trophy after battling for nearly 12 hours.

“Sometimes you gotta go backdoor,” an elated Ngo laughed as she explained her reasoning behind floating the final hand. She admitted luck had a lot to do with the victory but that it is one of the uncontrollable factors of poker. Soya found big hands like aces back to back in a short period of time. Ngo combined calculated risk with her overwhelming chip lead to ensure her victory. Congratulations to Anne Ngo and all the ladies who played the event. Stay tuned as the series concludes coverage with the main event and high roller.
