The combined prizes at the halfway point of the Summer Super Stack at Deerfoot Inn & Casino are more than $325k, with most of the biggest events yet to play. Just shy of half the money so far has come from the massive Event #3, with three starting flights last week and Day 2 on Sunday. That game drew more than 500 entries over three days, for prizes of almost $150k.
Three other games played out over the weekend. Saturday night hosted the team event, with 78 individual entries and $11,191 in prizes. Sunday featured two games alongside Day 2 of Event #3, the 1Day Deepstack (133 entries, $37,905 in prizes) and the 5-Card PLO (99 entries, $33,388 in prizes).

Mike Malm Deals for the Win in Deepstack Multi

Event #3: $340 Deepstack ($300 + $40)
The multi-day Deepstack game turned out to be a pretty big field. The opening flight last Thursday drew 109 entries, with 157 on Day 2. That led into a huge Day 1c with more than 250 entries, for a final field of 517, with prizes of almost $150k.
The official win was set at more than $30k, but as the game got short-handed near the end of the night, and with the entries to the side event closing, the final three players decided to cut a deal to allow them to jump into the side game.
Mike Malm was the leader at that point, but he was willing to give up $5k to 3rd-place Frank Gallie to secure the deal. Vince Chahley took the posted second-place prize, and both he and Malm jumped into the 5-Card PLO game for max-late registrations.
One other notable finish was Phil Clingo. He was heads-up for the title in the Spring series this year, falling one place short of the win when Todd Oakley took it down. He bagged the big stack to start Day 2, and was able to run that all the way up to the final table. He ended his day in 10th place, the first off the final table, but that means he was back-to-back final tables in this event.

Team Brassard Defeats API Leaders for Team Title

Event #6: $180 Team ($155 + $25)
Trevor & Nancy Brassard were only in the Team game on a whim. They were on their way from Lethbridge to Edmonton for the AC/DC concert on Sunday night, and decided to make a stopover in Calgary for some team poker.
As is typical for a Team game, there was as much party as poker going on in the Chrome room Saturday, with raucous action, lots of drinking, and lots of fun poker. In the end, 78 individual entries combined into teams after entries closed, with 5 teams in the payout structure.
It took about nine hours to play through the field, with about an hour of that as in-the-money play. In the end, it came down to the Brassards and a team composed of the Alberta Poker Index leaders, Weston Pring (overall 2026 leader) and Jo Teliani (2026 top woman).
Team Pring/Teliani had the chip lead to start heads-up, but the Brassards were playing an interesting style. They made it clear early in heads-up that they were looking to finish it, as they had to get on the road to Edmonton on Sunday for the concert and were playing a very aggressive style.
That left Pring/Teliani on their heels a bit, and in the end, the game came down to a flip. The money went in with Pring and Nancy in the driver’s seats, with Pring on ace-seven of diamonds against pocket fives. Pring flopped a backdoor diamond draw but couldn’t find any more help, leaving the fives in front for the win.

Roque Comes Back for the Win in the 1Day Deepstack

It was a pretty big turnout for the 1Day Deepstack game on Sunday afternoon, with 133 entries by the time registration closed. That put almost $28k into the prizes, with the top spot set at just over $10k.
It was a relatively quick game, considering the field. They played to the bubble in just under 8 hours, with about another 3.5 hours needed to decide the money spots. The final hand was dealt around 1:30 AM.
Runner-up Ryan Callahan had the chip lead for the early part of the money play, but in the end, Julius Roque turned on the heat in heads-up to take it down.
Roque was second in chips through most of the money play, getting heads-up against Callahan with a slight deficit after sending Matt Gudmundson home in 3rd place. From there, Roque ran pure, taking the game down on the right side of a race with ace-queen against pocket eights for Callahan.
Roque turned the queen to take the lead, and that was all he needed.

Event #8: $400 5-Card PLO ($355 + $45)
The 3rd game on Sunday was a new format for the Super Stack series: 5-Card PLO. It played the same as a regular PLO game, except the variance was vastly increased by the extra card.
The turnout was very respectable, with 99 entries by the time the desk closed. That put the prizes at more than $33k, with the original top prize at $9,348. That was adjusted a bit after the top two players, Stephen MacPherson & Brenton Pilling, chopped it up at the end, with both players agreeing to an even chop of $8,013 each.
This game was the odd-man out for most of Sunday, with reporting focus on Event #3 and Event #7. One further result to note: Vince Chahley was on his second final table of the day, with two top-three finishes. He took second after the deal to end Event #3, then immediately max-late reg’d the 5-Card, and took home 3rd place just before the HU deal.
The game took just under 10 hours to finish, with the final action coming at about 1:45 AM.
