The 2025 World Series of Poker at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas continued with Event #31: $800 No-Limit Hold’em Deepstack, one of the more affordable shots at bracelet glory on the summer schedule. But don’t let the price tag fool you. Any path to gold still requires navigating through a mountain of entries. This year’s edition drew a staggering 4,481 players, generating a prize pool of $3,136,700 and ensuring a long and grueling Day 2 to crown a champion.
That champion was Jonathan Stoeber, who emerged as the last player standing after a marathon session to capture his maiden WSOP bracelet and the top prize of $352,610. Entering the final table as one of the shortest stacks, Stoeber staged an impressive comeback, quickly flipping the script, seizing the chip lead, and dominating the rest of the way. The American ultimately defeated fellow countryman Daniel Cosner heads-up, with Cosner earning a career-best $234,908 for his runner-up finish.
For Stoeber, this victory marks the biggest score of his career and more than doubles his live tournament earnings, which now sit at around $675,000. While this was his first deep live run, he’s no stranger to WSOP success as he had already reached six WSOP final tables online, finishing fourth twice in 2023 and sixth twice in 2024. This time, he has done the job.
Interestingly, Cosner also has an impressive WSOP Online record, including a bracelet win in last year’s $1,000 NLHE Online event for $74,969. This second-place finish, however, is now the biggest cash of his career, pushing his total tournament earnings to $645,000.
Two bracelet winners joined them at the final table: Canadian pro Shawn Buchanan, who exited in fourth, and American Nicholas Seward, who bowed out in sixth.
From a massive field of 4,481 players, only 258 survived the opening day of Event #31: $800 No-Limit Hold’em Deepstack. With an early start on Day 2, the plan was to play down to a winner, and after nearly 13 hours of nonstop action, they achieved exactly that, wrapping up just before midnight.
Canadian Matthew Morin came into the final table as the overwhelming chip leader with 43 big blinds, while on the other end of the stick were Mikhail Sniatovskii and Jonathan Stoeber with two and eight big blinds, respectively.
Matthew Morin
Unsurprisingly, Sniatovskii was the first to fall. His ten-four was dominated by the ace-ten of Shawn Buchanan, and the board K♠Q♠K♦K♥2♦ offered no lifeline, ending his run in ninth place for $32,796.
Stoeber wasted no time making moves. After doubling through Peter Fox to reach an average stack, he finished the job just minutes later. Fox shoved under the gun with nine-eight and Stoeber quickly called with pocket queens. The flop 4♠9♠5♦ gave Fox a bit of hope, but the turn and river bricked, sending him out in eighth for $42,308.
From there, Stoeber simply took over. He called a shove from Ryan Hohner, who held ace-four with ten-eight. The flop 8♦5♥K♠ put Stoeber well ahead, and after the K♦ and 9♥, Hohner was out in seventh place for $55,071. He then eliminated Nicholas Seward in sixth with ace-ten against ace-five, overtaking Morin for the chip lead in the process.
Geoffrey Coatar was Stoeber’s next victim. His pocket queens surely looked promising until Stoeber revealed dominating pocket kings. A clean board of 7♣4♥3♣10♥A♦ offered no rescue, and Coatar exited in fifth for $95,834.
Now holding more than double the chips of all remaining players combined, Stoeber looked unstoppable. Matthew Morin did pick up the next elimination by sending fellow Canadian Shawn Buchanan out in fourth. Buchanan’s ace-seven fell to Morin’s king-queen when a queen landed on the flop, netting Buchanan $128,100.
However, the start-of-the-final-table chipleader’s momentum stopped there. Morin dropped four sizable pots to Daniel Cosner and then called off with six-five against Cosner’s ace-three. The board ran out K♠2♥9♣10♥4♠, missing both players, but ace-high held to eliminate Morin in third for $172,724.
Daniel Cosner
That left Stoeber and Cosner heads-up, with Stoeber holding a bigger than 2:1 chip lead. The duel didn’t last long, though. Stoeber shoved from the button with 6♠6♦, and Cosner called with A♠4♠. The flop 2♦9♥Q♠ kept Stoeber ahead, and the 8♣ turn left Cosner drawing to only three outs. The 8♣ river changed nothing, and just like that, it was over.
Jonathan Stoeber completed a remarkable comeback from the short stack to become the 2025 WSOP Event #31 champion. He earned $352,610 and his first WSOP bracelet, while Daniel Cosner added a career-best $234,908 to his résumé and remains a one-time bracelet winner from a WSOP Online event.
