After two days of four-card poker action, the $600 PLO Deepstack game is complete, and Cristian Gutierrez picked up his first bracelet with the win. The Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas saw 3,110 entries for this game, for total prizes of $1,657,008.
Along with his first gold bracelet from the summer party, Gutierrez pocketed $193,780 for the win. He took down the top prize over runner-up Robert Chorlian heads up, with Chorlian winning $129,084 for second spot.
After the win, while speaking with PokerNews, Gutierrez said that he was getting a bit frustrated with hold’em. After losing 10 buy-ins on the wrong end of flips, he decided he wanted something different.
After discovering Omaha last year at Borgata, he’s been working on his four-card game, along with other mixed games, to broaden his poker horizons. “You know, sometimes you’re just running bad,” he said. “I was running bad on hold’em.”
That prompted the buy-in for the low-stakes PLO Deepstack game, and right from the start, he felt like he’d made the right choice. “I started playing and I felt confident from the first moment I sat down. I was playing great, making some moves and making some hands as well.”
The play ran quickly in this one. They played through the 3,110 entries in just two days, with the final day lasting about 12 hours. Winner Gutierrez came to the final table second in chips, but when Day 2 started, he didn’t figure in the top-10 stacks. He brought a respectable 1.3 million into Day 2, but that still put him down the list in 17th place of the 108 stacks returning for the final day.
The final table action was quick, with the field down to 5 less than an hour after they sat down. As the field got shorter, Gutierrez ramped up his aggression, sitting on about 3x more chips than anyone else with play four ways after flopping a boat.
Heads up was equally quick, finishing out in less than 10 hands. Gutierrez was the big leader to start heads up, but runner-up Chorlian managed to get an early chip up to make it a bit more of a competition, but Gutierrez played a waiting game, folding his buttons to relentless raises early.
He was looking for the right place to lay his trap, and he found it when he flopped two pair against Chorlian’s pocket aces. After the flop, Gutierrez checked and Chorlian potted to 14 million with his double-suited rockets, only to face the re-pot from Gutierrez.

That left Chorlian with a choice — call it off for the rest of his chips right there, or fold with under 10 million behind, less than 5 big blinds. He elected to call it off, but Gutierrez’s two pair was ahead, and, by the river, the Colombian winner was floating the boat.
