Brotherwood had a bit more and reshoved himself with Tremblay making the call with the biggest stack. Tremblay had kings with a non-seven, Brotherwood was on queens with a ten-eight, and Quon had jacks with a king-nine. The kings held for Tremblay and Quon was out in 9th with Brotherwood out in 8th.

Richardson Doubles to Survive
Level: 15 (2500/5000/5000) Entries: 9/66 Prizes: $37,620 Eric Wasylenko raised early to 10k before Cody Richardson shoved 11k overtop of him. Steve Chung made it 35k to go from the middle, and when it folded back to Wasy, he got out of the way.
Chung had pocket kings while Richardson had an ace and an unknown card beneath it. Chung was happy to leave it in suspense as the board ran out 5♣3♥5♠9♥3♠. A player joked on the flop that Richardson must have cracked the kings with trip fives, but Richardson smiled and revealed his buried three. “No, I have trip threes. Sorry Deven.” Deven Lane is the other short stack at the table and was likely hoping for a bag after the hand.
-
Taghavi Takes One
Level: 14 (2000/4000/4000) Entries: 9/66 Prizes: $37,620 Jimmy Lee raised the hijack to 10k and Shawn Taghavi called from the button. The action checked around on the Q♦10♣8♠ flop but Lee led for 7k on the 8♥ turn. Taghavi called to the 5♦ river but mucked when Lee fired 15k.
-

- Matthew Ouellette
- Jimmy Lee
- Deven Lane
- Skyler York
- Shawn Taghavi
- Eric Wasylenko
- Cody Richardson
- Colten Yamagishi
- Steve Chung
It looks like Wasy is still the chip leader, but he’s down a bit from the last count and Skyler York is sitting with a nice stack in front of him.
-

Entries Closed on 1a
Level: 10 (1000/1500/1500) Entries: 25/66 Prizes: $37,620 Registration for Day 1a ended with 66 entries on the board and 25 players still alive at the felt. The bags will come out when they hit 8 players later tonight with all players in the money for Day 2.
They’ll do this all over again tomorrow for Day 1b, and the expectation is that the field will be quite a bit bigger than today. With almost $40k in prizes from today’s flight, $100k in total by the time entries close tomorrow seems within expectations.
-
More than 70 Entries
Level: 6 (300/600/600) Entries: 40/73 Prizes: $13,870 The PLO Turbo prizes are nearly up to $14k now with 73 entries on the board. Among the new faces I’ve spotted recently are Antoine Saddleback, Francis Fan, Shane Brotherwood, and Gerald Chung.
-
More than $10k
Level: 4 (200/400/400) Entries: 41/56 Prizes: $10,640 The PLO Side game is up to 55 entries for prizes of more than $10k now. The action is in Level 4 with less than 5 minutes to play and they’ll take their first break of the day after Level 5.
Among the players in the game are Mike Malm, who is leading the API Player of the Year race right now, Martin Riley, Malcolm Bolger, Bash Ramahi, Nancy Kelln, Josie Brown, Glyn Gracias, and Ron Lauzon.
-
Final Level of Entry
Level: 9 (600/1200/1200) Entries: 26/63 Prizes: $35,910 The prizes are now more than $35k with 63 entries on the board as Level 9 begins. This is the final level of entry for Day 1a with entries remaining open until the end of the dinner break that follows this level. A few of the newer entries I’ve seen today include Matthew Ouellette, Michael “Berny” Bernstein, PPT Player of the Year leader Eric Wasylenko, and Alex Liu, who had the biggest score of his career this summer after winning the August Main in Calgary.
-
PLO Turbo is Underway
Level: 1 (100/100/100) Entries: 14/14 Prizes: $2,660 The PLO Turbo side game is now off and running with 14 players in their seats to start. Regular PLO player Stefan Maloney is among the people in the mix so far, as well as Daniel O’Leary, and the winner of last night’s Turbo game, Larry Quon.
-
Up to 55 Entries
Level: 7 (400/800/800) Entries: 32/55 Prizes: $31,350 The prizes are over $31k now with 55 entries in the game for Day 1a. There are still about 2 hours left to enter this flight with another full flight running tomorrow, which I expect will get much better turnout.
-
Nearly 50 Entries
Level: 7 (400/800/800) Entries: 29/49 Prizes: $27,930 The final three levels of entry are about to begin with the field at 49 entries for prizes of almost $28k. Entries for today’s flight will close in just under 3 hours.
-
More than $25k in Prizes
Level: 6 (300/600/600) Entries: 30/44 Prizes: $25,080 Level 6 has just begun with 44 entries on the board. That puts the 1a prizes at just over $25k with more than 3.5 hours left to enter today’s opening flight. There is another flight tomorrow which I expect to be significantly bigger, but there’s still plenty of time for today’s numbers to grow as well.
-
More than $20k in Prizes
Level: 5 (300/500/500) Entries: 27/37 Prizes: $21,090 The prizes are now over $21k with 37 entries on the board and just over 30 minutes to play in Level 5. There are still more than 4 hours left to enter this game so the numbers are bound to increase but the truth is, today’s field is a bit weaker than expected so far.

Mixed Tag Team Fun for Saturday
Event: Event #6: $440 NLH/PLO Team ($400 + $40) Date: Nov 23, 6 PM Blinds: 20 Minutes Starting Stack: 20k Late Entry: 9 Levels (~9:15 PM) Day 1 Ends: One-Day Event There’s a bit of a switch with the first Team event in the 2024 Tournament of Champions. There will be two Team games this series with the second one running on the final weekend of play. The first Tean game is a Mix between NLH and PLO, following the classic format of the regular Mix games with NLH in the odd levels and PLO in the even levels.
Teams consist of two players and players must switch every blind level increase. Each team gets 5 Switch Tickets to start the game, and they can use the tickets at any time between hands to either swap with their own teammate, or force another team to swap out their players.
Play kicks off at 6 pm with 20k in chips. They’ll play 20-minute levels with 9 levels to enter the game. That should put the final entry at about 9:15 PM.
This will be my second priority on Saturday so I’m not sure how much coverage it will get as I’ll be watching Day 1b of Event #4 for the early part of the day.

First Break of 1a

With three levels of play complete the prizes are sitting at $17,670. Pav Braich, Justin Pennell, and the winner of last night’s Seniors game, John Donnelly.
-
More than $15k
Level: 3 (200/300/300) Entries: 24/28 Prizes: $15,960 There are almost $16k in prizes now with the field up to 28 entries and less than 10 minutes to play in Level 3. The first break of the day follows this level.
Among the recent entries I spotted were Colten Yamagishi, Sklyer York, and Kali Shuali.
-
Up to 25 Entries
Level: 3 (200/300/300) Entries: 21/25 Prizes: $14,250 The prizes are up to almost $15k with the action now in Level 3. There are just under 35 minutes to play in this level with the first break of the day scheduled to follow.
Among the players I’ve spotted in today’s action are Jayveen Lumahan, Mal Hagan, Rob Lothian (4th in the Seniors game yesterday), Brett Worton (second in the Seniors), Benny Sarnelli, Johnny Dalphond, Sean Taghavi, and Cindy Grabia.

Four-card Fun for Friday Night
Event: Event #5: $230 PLO Turbo ($200 + $30) Date: Nov 22, 6 PM Blinds: 20 Minutes Starting Stack: 20k Late Entry: 9 Levels (~9:30 PM) Day 1 Ends: One-Day Event Friday’s side dish is served with four-cards in every hand as the first PLO event of the series kicks off. The action goes at 6 PM with entries available for 9 levels, or until about 9:30 PM.
Players buy in for 20k in chips for 20-minute turbo levels throughout the game. As this is the side game, I won’t likely have much attention for this game until after Day 1a of Event #4 bags up at the end of its day.
-
$10k in Prizes in Level 1
Level: 1 (100/100/100) Entries: 17/18 Prizes: $10,260 The first multi-day game of the series is underway with a modest start. There are 18 entries on the board with about 10 minutes to play in Level 1 for $10,260 in prizes so far. Entries today are open for 9 levels of poker plus breaks, with players able to buy a stack as late as 8:00 PM.

John Donnelly Wins Second PPT Title in Seniors
John Donnelly, winner of Seniors event John Donnelly already has a couple of trophies from the PPT, but he was still pretty happy to take down the Seniors event. Donnelly won the Main Event last July then followed that up a few weeks later with a win in the Seniors event in the following series.
Tonight he added a second Seniors title to his resume with a little rungood, some well-timed aggression, and disciplined folds when he needed to get out of the way. The final hand was a bit of rungood as he got there with a dominated ace, but he was in a position to win because of a previous double that saw his best ace hold.
He was a big stack early on tonight but relatively short by the time they got to the final table. He played a cagey game, mostly staying out of the way of the big stacks of Worton and Ghorbani. That let him stay alive until the end and take down the win.
-
Brett Worton Out in 2nd Place for $5,301
Brett Worton Brett Worton has won this event a couple of years ago in 2022, and he’s bagged a couple of second places and other cashes in Seniors games around Alberta. He came close to a second win tonight as the table captain for most of the final table, but he’ll have to settle for another second place after John Donnelly had a huge heads-up to take down the title.
Worton was the big stack for the whole final table until they got two ways. He started heads up with a big lead, but Donnelly doubled early. “Now we have a game,” Worton said when it was about 1.2m to 900k.
He might have wished that wasn’t quite so prophetic as the game was indeed on. Donnelly came back a few minutes later with a big double to the lead when his ace-queen held over ace-ten for Worton. That left Worton on about 400k, less than 10 bigs.
He managed to come back a bit and was up to around 800k when the final hand came down. It was all in before the flop with Worton on ace-seven over ace-five with a good shot at a double or at least a chopped pot.
The poker gods had other ideas, however, as Donnelly found his five on the river for the win.

Donnelly Doubles to Big Lead
Level: 25 (25000/50000/50000) Entries: 2/93 Prizes: $26,505 John Donnelly raised to 100k, then snapped it off when Brett Worton called. It was a heads-up cooler with Donnelly on an unsuited ace-queen versus the suited ace-ten for Worton. Both players missed the board and Donnelly held for a double on 880k, which gives him the lead and leaves Worton on about 400k.
-
Richard Housch Out in 3rd Place for $3,445
Level: 24 (20000/40000/40000) Entries: 2/93 Prizes: $26,505 Richard Housch Richard “Richochet” Housch was down to 15k when there were still 6 players left in the game but he laddered up pretty nicely to third tonight with some rungood and well-timed action. In his final hand, he shoved the small blind with an ace but ran into a bigger one for Brett Worton in the big.
-
Rob Lothian Out in 4th Place for $2,650
Level: 23 (15000/30000/30000) Entries: 3/93 Prizes: $26,505 Rob Lothian They are down to three left and Brett Worton has all the chips after he sent Rob Lothian to the rail. Worton shoved the small blind with the big stack and Lothian called from the big with the small. Lothian was ahead with an ace versus a kind, but Worton his flush cards to take it down.
-
Faramarz Ghorbani Out in 5th Place for $2,040
Level: 23 (15000/30000/30000) Entries: 4/93 Prizes: $26,505 Faramarz Ghorbani They are down to 4 left after Faramarz Ghorbani shoved his small blind with king-queen and Brett Worton called from the big with jacks. Worton hit a jack on the flop and held for the win.
The average stack is now a bit less than 20 bigs.
-
Ed Zurawell Out in 6th Place for $1,616
Level: 22 (15000/25000/25000) Entries: 5/93 Prizes: $26,505 Ed Zurawell Ed Zurawell was forced all in from the big blind, and small blind Brett Worton called. Zurawell had fives against ten-four, but Worton spiked a ten on the flop and held to bring the table down to five.
They are around 15 big blinds deep on average right now, and Worton has most of the chips, so most of the table is pretty short stacked right now.
-
Housch Staying Alive
Level: 22 (15000/25000/25000) Entries: 6/93 Prizes: $26,505 Richard Housch is still alive and now over 200k. Rett Worton raised under the gun to 50k, then called when Housch shoved his stack of 75k. Housh had ace-jack against king-jack and he flopped an ace for the win.
-
Housch Rebuilding Fumes
Level: 21 (10000/20000/20000) Entries: 6/93 Prizes: $26,505 Richard Housch was down to just 15k afrter he lost a big confrontation with John Donnelly. The chips went in with Housch on king-ten against king-jack for Donnelly and the jack played for the win. Housch has since chipped back up to about 100k, in part after getting a double through Donnelly with ace-ten over ace-three.
-
All in for Chop
Level: 21 (10000/20000/20000) Entries: 6/93 Prizes: $26,505 Richard Housch raised the small blind to 40k and Faramarz Ghorbani called from the big. It all kicked off on the 8♣6♣5♥ flop. Housch shoved and Ghorbani snap-called.
Ghorbani had 9♣5♣ for bottom pair and the straight flush draw against two pair for Housc with 8♥6♥. In an unlikely runout, the 9♠7♠ put a straight on the board for a chop.
-

Larry Quon Wins Turbo Game
Larry Quon, Winner of the Turbo Michael St. Pierre-Porter, runner-up in the Turbo It was a quick heads up tonight with Larry Quon emerging the winner. I caught the aftermath of the final hand where Michael St. Pierre-Porter flopped a pair and rivered a straight, but it was a smaller straight than Larry Quon. Quon had the chip lead when it all went in and took down the top prize tonight.
-
Bolger Out in 7th Place

Bolger swore and mucked his hand as Worton showed ace-ten.
-

Oullette looked good to double but St. Pierre-Porter flopped a pair, turned two pair, and rivered the boat for a huge cooler win.
-

Level: 19 (6000/12000/12000) Entries: 4/75 Prizes: $14,250 They are down to 4 left after the exit of Tyler Rumple in 5th place. Larry Quon looks to have the edge in chips right now, but most of the chips are in front of him and Michael St. Pierre-Porter. I’m still watching the Seniors game, and it looks like this one might end before that game.
-

Broumas Gets One from Bolger
Level: 16 (3000/6000/6000) Entries: 15/93 Prizes: $26,505 George Broumas folded a pair of nines a few hands earlier to a big blind shove from Russ Sluchincki. Bromas covered Sluchinski but the stack would have cut into his chips pretty sharply if he called and lost. Malcolm Bolger is seated to his right, and they got into a discussion with Bolger saying the nines was a clear call while Broumas was insistent that it was too many chips.
The discussion was still underway when Broumas raised under the gun and it folded around to Bolger’s big blind. He joked “So if I go all in, you’ll fold?” Broumas laughed and said no, and Bolger flatted to the 4♠6♦A♦ flop. They checked it through the 2♠ turn and Bolger fired 20k on the K♣ river.
Broumas called and showed pocket eights, taking the hand down when Bolger mucked. Dave Pietrzyko joked that he was expecting Broumas to show pocket nines. Paul Meyer was the most recent exit to bring the game to 15, 5 off the money and four away from hand-for-hand bubble play at 11.

Low Sugar
Level: 15 (2500/5000/5000) Entries: 16/93 Prizes: $16,505 Ed Zurawell raised the cutoff to 10k and it folded around to Rob Lothian in the big blind. Lothian counted out a reraise to 60k and tossed it in.
“60? Why are you going to to 60 from 10?” Zurawell asked.
“Low sugar,” answered Lothian with a smile. “Just wanted to see if you had something big,” he added as he collected the pot.

Narayan Takes it on River
Level: 13 (1500/3000/3000) Entries: 21/93 Prizes: $26,505 I picked up the action on a four-way flop of 2♦7♣2♥. It checked around and again on the 4♦ turn. On the [invalid notations]As[/pcn river, it checked to Kim Graham under the gun, and he bet 5,500. Naleen Narayan came over the top to 11k which pushed out blinds John Donnelly and Brian Wells before Graham also got out of the way.
In the next hand, Donnelly raised the button to 7k but then mucked it when Graham shoved for about 60k from the big blind.

They were a bit late getting started, but Level 1 is now in play with 12 players to start and prizes of $2,280. First Multi-Day Game of the Series Starts Friday
Event: Event #4: $670 NLH Day 1A ($600 + $70) Dates: Nov 22 – 24 Day 1a: Nov 22, 1 PM Day 1b: Nov 23, 1 PM Day 2 Nov 24, 1 PM Blinds: 40 Minutes Starting Stack: 25k4 Late Entry: 9 Levels (~8:00 PM) Day 1 Ends: 12.5% of the Field The multi-day games kick off on Friday at 1 PM with Day 1a of the $670. There are two chances to bag a stack for Sunday’s Day 2 with Day 1a running Fri, Nov 22, and Day 1b running on Sat, Nov 23.
Players can play both starting days regardless of their chip status. This means that players who bag a small stack on Day 1a can come back on 1b to try again if they like — in the event they back two stacks, the bigger stack will play while the smaller stack is paid out a min-cash and removed from play.
Players start the day with 25k in chips to play 40-minute levels throughout the game. Entries are open until the start of Level 10 which should be around 8 PM on each day. Day 1 play will continue until 12.5% of the field remains, at which point the bags will come out and the remaining players move on to Day 2. That means there is no hard stop point for Day 1 play — they’ll play as long as it takes to get down to 12.5% with Day 2 starting at the earliest endpoint for Day 1 play.
This game should be my main focus throughout the weekend.

Two More Levels of Entry
Level: 7 (400/800/800) Entries: 55/82 Prizes: $23,370 Level 7 has just over 20 minutes to play with the field at 82 entries and 55 players still at the felt. They’ll take their dinner break following Level 8 and when they return for Level 9 at about 5:00 pm, entries for the first event will be closed.

Both Grahams in the Mix
Level: 6 (300/600/600) Entries: 56/79 Prizes: $22,515 Level 6 has just begin with he field at 79 entries now for prizes of $22,515. I’ve just had another walk around the room and among the other players I spotted today were John Donnelly, Joe Herlein, Brian Wells, Gerald Chung, Cliff Green, Keith Graham (who is here with his twin brother Kim), Ali Razzaq, Kirk Nilson, Ed Zurawell, and Nancy Kelln, who was at the final table of the recent Seniors game in Calgary. Former winner of this event Mike X is also in the crowd today.
-
More than $22k in Prizes
Level: 5 (300/500/500) Entries: 59/78 Prizes: $22,230 The field is closing in on 80 entries with more than $22k in prizes already in the prize pool. There is just under 2.5 hours left to enter the game today so that number should still grow with 100 entries easily within sight.
I’ve just arrived in the room at Pure Casino Yellowhead and a first look around the room has revealed Ron Lauzon, Malcolm Bolger, Francis Fan, Rob Lothian, Gord Pettit, Brett Worton, and Kim Graham, who won the last Seniors event here before going on to final table the Main Event.

PPT Tournament of Champions is Underway!
Level: 1 (100/100/100) Entries: 23/23 Prizes: $6,555 It’s a good start for the opening event of the 2024 Tournament of Champions with 23 Seniors in their seats to start the game. I am not yet on the floor and likely won’t be for a couple of hours yet but I should be reporting live sometime after the first break,
There is more than $6,500 in the prize pool to start the day, so it looks like this could be a pretty big game with a late finish.

Survivor is Thursday’s Third Game
Event: Event #3: $340 Survivor ($300 + $40) Date: Nov 21, 7 pm Blinds: 20 Minutes Starting Stack: 20k Late Entry: 6 Levels (~9:15 PM) Day 1 Ends: One-Day Event The third game on the opening day is a Survivor format where all players in the money chop the prize pool evenly. The game gets going at 7 PM with 20k in chips to start. They play 20=minute levels until they hit 10% of the field when the game will end.
Players have 6 levels to enter the game, which means the last chance to enter will be about 9:15 on Thursday evening. This game is my third priority on Thursday so it likely won’t get much coverage. I’ll try to keep the numbers up to date and get a photo of the players who make the money, but otherwise, it’s likely this one is pretty dark.
-
NLH Turbo is First Open Event
Event: Event #2: $230 NLH Turbo ($200 + $30) Date: Nov 21, 4 pm Blinds: 20 Minutes Starting Stack: 20k Late Entry: 9 Levels (~7:30 PM) Day 1 Ends: One-Day Event The opening day of action for the 2024 Tournament of Champions starts with a 50+ game, but there is an open side game starting at 4 PM for the chronologically disadvantaged players.
Players start the day with 20k in chips for 20-minute levels in this Turbo game. Entries are open for 9 levels plus breaks, so the last chance to buy into this one should be about 7:30 PM Thursday evening. After that, it will be a race to the finish as this will end in the single-day.
My main focus on Thursday will be the Seniors game to start, but once the Seniors finish, if this game is still running, I’ll move over to cover the endgame. At the very least, I should be able to get numbers and winners photos sorted.

As Usual, Seniors First
Event: Pure Poker Tour Series #6 – Event #1: $340 Seniors First ($300 + $40) Date: Nov 21, Noon Blinds: 30 Minutes Starting Stack: 25k Late Entry: 8 Levels (~5 PM) Day 1 Ends: One-Day Event The final Pure Poker Tour series of 2024 is set to go with the opening action, as usual, going to the Senior players. The open salvos for the 50+ game will be fired starting at noon on Thursday.
Players start out with 25k in chips for 30-minute levels and they’ll have 8 levels to enter the game. That should put the last chance to register at about 5 pm when the return from the dinner break following Level 8.
This is a one-day game so they’ll finish it out sometime late Thursday evening or the wee hours of Friday morning. This will be my main focus for the opening day of action.
