  • Shane Chief Goes Worst to First for Win in Deepstack

Shane Chief went from the shartest stack to start the day to the winner in Event #3

It was quite a run for Shane Chief today. He came into the day as the nut low stack with 39k to his name. About 9 hours later, he was sitting behind all 11.6 million in play.

It wasn’t even till the final table that he really turned it on. Through much of the early part of Day 2 he was playing about 10 bigs and just surviving. Then the final table convened, and sudden;y he couldn’t lose. He had a third of the chips in play 5-handed, and 9 million when they were three ways.

It almost went south for him in heads up, though. He was 9:2 ahead to start, but David MacNeil wasn’t going lightly tonight. He chipped up to close to even before the final confrontation saw him wake up with tens against jacks for Chief. Teh jacks held, and Chief still had a slight lead, so the game was his.

This was his third win on the live felt, and it will be his biggest score ever once it’s recorded after the series.

  • David MacNeil Out in 2nd Place for $15,228

    Level:30 (80000/160000/160000)
    Entries:1/465
    Prizes:$132,525
    David MacNeil

David MacNeil made a valiant comeback attempt. He had a huge deficit coming into heads up with Shane Chief on 9 million to his 2 million. He managed to chip away at Chief’s lead to get close to even, but then it all went south for him on a heads up cooler.

Earlier in the level, as they traded blinds back and forth, MacNeil joked that, eventually, the dealer would have to give them both hands at the same time. That’s what happened when MacNeil woke up with tens against jacks for Chief. The money was in and the board ran clean for the jacks to send MacNeil home in second place.

Second and third place cut a deal just before 3rd was awarded that took $2k from the original payouts for second to add to 3rd, so 3rd place was worth $13,662 while 2nd pocketed $15,228. First place money was unaffected by the deal.

  • Down to Heads Up

    Level:29 (60000/120000/120000)
    Entries:2/465
    Prizes:$132,525

They are heads up in Event #3 now after the anonymous player took 3rd place today. The money went in on the 396 flop after a limped family pot pre.

Dabid MacNeil shoved after a couple of checks, and got the call from Anon while leader Shane Chief backed away. MacNeil was drawing to clubs against the nine. Another nine on the turn improved Anon to trips, but the 8 river clubbed Anon to the rail.

  • David Bailey Out in 4th Place for $9,012

    Level:28 (50000/100000/100000)
    Entries:3/465
    Prizes:$132,525
    David Bailey

The game is three ways now after David Bailey ended his day in 4th. He raised the small blind to 325k and the anonymous player called from the big blind. Bailey shoved the 10QK flop with king-jack for top pair and the open-ended draw. The snap-call came immediately after from aces in the big blind.

Bailey hit two pair on the J turn, but that gave Broadway to the big blind. 6 on the river was a brick and Bailey was done in 4th place.

  • Chief Keeps Chipping Up

    Level:28 (50000/100000/100000)
    Entries:4/465
    Prizes:$132,525

Shane Chief is on a run. He took a nice-sized pot on the turn after limped preflop action. The 10QJ flop saw the anonymous player check-raise from 100k to 275k. Chief called to the A turn when, after another check, he bet 500k to get the fold. He showed king-nine for the flopped nuts, then joked that the dealer killed his action with the ace.

In the next hand, he raised the small blind to 250k and David MacNeil called from the big. Chief fired 200k on the 373 flop, then shoved when MacNeil reraised to 700k. MacNeil took a few minutes to think but folded after showing a seven. Chief showed ace-three for the trips as he collected the pot.

  • Hoshang Sarwary Out in 5th Place for $6,759

    Level:28 (50000/100000/100000)
    Entries:4/465
    Prizes:$132,525
    Hoshang Sarwary

The game is four-handed now after the exit of Hoshang Sarwary in 5th place tonight. I was out of the room for a minute and missed the action.

  • Anon Doubles to More than 2 Million

    Level:28 (50000/100000/100000)
    Entries:5/465
    Prizes:$132,525

David Bailey just took a hit when the anonymous player shoved under the gun and Bailey called off from the big blind. He was ahead with ace-queen over king-ten suited, but the king came on the river to drop him to around 800k while the winner is up over 2 million now.

  • Chief Has Nearly Half the Chips in Play

    Level:28 (50000/100000/100000)
    Entries:5/465
    Prizes:$132,525

The players are on a break following Level 27, and I’ve had a chance to count the chips. Shane Chief is still the big leader, but he’s now up to nearly half the chips in play with 5.35 million of 11.6 total. David MacNeil is second with 2.795 million, David Bailey is at 1.56 million for 3rd, while the anon players is 4th with 1.22 million. Hoshang Sarwary is now the short stack on 800k.

They’ll be back in action in about 8 minutes with blinds at 50k/100k/100k.

  • Chief from Worst to First

    Level:27 (40000/80000/80000)
    Entries:5/465
    Prizes:$132,525

Shane Chief is having a bit of a sunrun today and it’s a nice reminder that poker is a game of swings and “A chip and a chair” is a real thing. Chief came into the day with just 39k, the smallest stack in the room. Six and a half hours later, he’s in the final five and sitting behind the biggest stack in the room with about 3.8 million in front of him now.

There is a break coming up in about 15 minutes, and I’ll di another round of full counts at that point.

  • Phillip Clingo Out in 6th Place for $5,301

    Level:27 (40000/80000/80000)
    Entries:5/465

    Entries:6/465
    Prizes:$132,525

Phillip Clingo raised the hijack to 120k and got a call from David MacNeil in the cutoff as well as big blind Shane Chief. Chief checked the 743 flop before Clingo fired 150k.

MacNeil made the call while Chief mucked his hand. Clingo sized up to 250k on the 8 turn, then up to 575k on the 5 river, getting calls from McNeil the whole way.

“Set,” Clingo said, showing pocket fives. MacNeil rolled over pocket sixes for a straight on the river

    Entries:11/465
    Prizes:$132,525

In one of the final hands of Level 24, Alicia Dodds limped in from the middle, and was called by both players in the blinds. It checked to Dodds on the Q6K flop and she fired 90k. David MacNeil called from the small blind while big blind Chris Klementis mucked his hand.

Both remaining players checked the 2 turn and after a check from MacNeil on the 8 river, Dodds bet 150k. MacNeil had to think about it for a bit, but he made the call with ace-queen for second pair, while Dodds was on a busted diamond draw and gutshot with ten-nine.

    Entries:13/465
    Prizes:$132,525

Jacqueline Ray shoved the hijack before Gennady Klimenko shoved the small blind with less. Shane Chief hit the tank in the big blind for a bit before mucking.

Klimenko was in tough with jacks against kings for Ray. The 369A5 board ran clean for the kings, and Ray is up to about 600k while Klimenko is at the cage collecting 14th-place money.

  • Howat Out in 16th Place

    Level:23 (15000/30000/30000)
    Entries:15/465
    Prizes:$132,525

It’s been a brutal couple of levels for the start-of-day leader Dave Howat, and he just hit the cage for 15th place today. PArt of the damage came a few minutes ago when he doubled up Jordan Banfield to drop to around 200k. In the final hand, he shoved the small blind, but big blind Scott Groome woke up with an ace and called off the 215k with more.

Howat was on Q3 against A5. Groome hit his 5, and that was all he needed to take it down on a board of 58K44.

    Entries:20/465
    Prizes:$132,525

Dave Howat opened to 25k from the cutoff before Jordan Banfield shoved 260k from the button. Howat made the call for what amounted to a race between his ace-eight and the king-jack of Banfield.

Banfield bricked the flop, but found his jack on the turn of 6107J4. The jack gave Banfield the lead, but it also gave Howat a bigger draw to the spades, along with his ace. He bricked the river, however, and sent the double to Banfield, putting the WPT Global streamer up to about 600k and dropping start-of-day leader Howat to about 200k.

  • Groome Doubles Through Banfield

    Entries:20/465
    Prizes:$132,525

I arrived at the table with preflop action complete and Scott Groome at risk against WPT Global streamer Jordan Banfield. Banfield was dominated with ace-queen into ace-king, and the 677K3 improved Groome for the win. Groome has about 525k now while Banfield dropped to around 350k after the hand.

They are down to 21 now with 26:26 left in Level 18 ad the clock is now paused until the bubble bursts, with two minutes coming off for each hand played.

  • 4 Off the Bags

    Level:17 (4000/8000/8000)
    Entries:24/201 (51/465)

  • Klementis Has Chips

    Level:15 (2500/5000/5000)
    Entries:30/201 (57/465)
    Prizes:Day 1c: $57,285 (Combined: $134,715)

Since my tour of the room, it looks like Chris Klementis has the big stack right now with 450k as Level 15 begins. He picked up some of those chips after calling off with two pair and fading the straight flush draw for his opponent. Klementis was 3rd in the WSOP-C Main here at Deerfoot last August, so there’s no question he knows what he’s doing behind a stack of chips.

They are now 10 players off the bags coming out.

  • Pretty Even Stacks Right Now

    Level:14 (2000/4000/4000)
    Entries:32/201 (59/465)
    Prizes:Day 1c: $57,285 (Combined: $134,715)

They are now 12 players away from the end of the night with 32 players left alive. I just wandered around the room to look for a big stack, but didn’t really find one. I saw quite a few players sitting on two stacks of white plus some oranges for stacks in the 250k range, but I didn’t see anyone with 3 stacks of whites or what looked like more than 300k.

There are just over 10 minutes to play in Level 14 and there are another break scheduled following this level.

  • 16 Off the Bags

    Level:13 (1500/3000/3000)
    Entries:36/201 (63/465)
    Prizes:Day 1c: $57,285 (Combined: $134,715)

They are down to 36 players left in Day 1c, with 20 players expected to advance later tonight. The twp previous flights went into Level 17 before they finished, as play slowed considerably as they neared the bags, and I expect a similar pattern tonight.

  • 465 Entries for Event #3

    Level:13 (1500/3000/3000)
    Entries:45/201 (72/465)
    Prizes:Day 1c: $57,285 (Combined: $134,715)

Entries are closed for Event #3 and the final tally was 465 entries for prizes of $134,715. 201 entries came from the final flight today.

I’m still waiting to get eyes on the prize pool, but it looks like 20 players will advance from today’s flight for a total of 47 returning to the action on Sunday, in the money for Day 2. I’ll get the Day 2 prizes posted as soon as I can, with seat assignments to come out late tonight after 1c bags.

  • More than 200 Entries for 1c

    Level:11 (1000/2000/2000)
    Entries:84/201 (111/465)
    Prizes:Day 1c: $57,285 (Combined: $134,715)

Level 11 has just completed so there are now a bit less than 10 minutes remaining in the entry period for this opening multi-day event. The 1c field just pushed over 200 entries with 201 on the board as the break began.

That puts the combined prizes just one entry shy of $135k.

  • 10 Away from 200 with 45 Minutes to Enter

    Level:11 (1000/2000/2000)
    Entries:90/190 (117/454)
    Prizes:Day 1c: $54,150 (Combined: $131,580)

The combined prizes are over $130k now with 190 entries on the board for Day 1c. Level 11 has just begun so there are a bit less than 45 minutes left to enter this event. They need 10 more entries today to hit 200 for 1c, and that’s certainly not out of the question.

  • Closing in on $130k

    Level:10 (800/1600/1600)
    Entries:91/182 (118/446)
    Prizes:Day 1c: $51,870 (Combined: $129,300)

The field is now just a couple of entries shy of cracking $130k in prizes. Day 1c now has 182 entries for combined prizes of $129,300, meaning 185 entries would put them over the top. The registration desk is still open for another hour, so it seems almost certain they’ll be playing for a bit more than $130k.

  • Up to 176 Entries

    Level:9 (600/1200/1200)
    Entries:100/176 (127/440)
    Prizes:Day 1c: $50,160 (Combined: $127,590)

The 1c prizes are now over $50k for a combined total of $127,590 from 176 1c entries and 440 overall. There are still about 90 minutes left to enter today’s flight, so it looks possible that today’s final tally couple be pushing 200 entries before the end.

  • KKPoker in the House

    Level:8 (500/1000/1000)
    Entries:111/167 (138/431)
    Prizes:Day 1c: $47,595 (Combined: $125,025)
Western Canadian Players’ rep for KKPoker. Gusto Katievo

Gusto Katievo is a familiar face around Alberta poker rooms, but people might be forgiven for being a bit surprised to see him at a table. His usual role is running around behind the scenes handing out tickets & swag and taking photos with players as part of his duties with KKPoker, but he also likes to grind it out when he can.

He’s in action here on Day 1c, looking to bag a stack for tomorrow. You can check out KKPoker for online satellites to events later this week here at Deerfoot, as well as other big events across Canada.

  • More than $120k in Prizes

    Level:6 (300/600/600)
    Entries:117/153 (144/417)
    Prizes:Day 1c: $43,605 (Combined: $121,035)

The 1c field is up to 153 with about 8 minutes to play in Level 6. That puts the combined prizes over $120k with 417 total entries.

The registration desk is still open for another 3.5 hours and, given this is the final chance to bag a stack for Day 2, I expect action at the rebuy desk to be brisk right up until the end of entries. At this point, it looks like the field will end up with 175 or more today, which will push the combined prizes near $130k.

  • More than 400 Entries

    Level:5 (300/500/500)
    Entries:141/118 (145/405)
    Prizes:Day 1c: $40,185 (Combined: $117,615)

The combined field is now over 400 entries with 141 on the board for Day 1c. There are about 10 minutes to play in Level 5, and entries are still open for more than 4 hours. The prizes are now closing in on $120k and they will cross that mark when they hit 150 entries in today’s flight.

  • Nearing 400 Entries

    Level:5 (300/500/500)
    Entries:129/129 (156/393)
    Prizes:Day 1c: $36,765 (Combined: $114,195)

Level 5 has just begun and the 1c field is now at 129 entries. That puts the combined total at 393 for prizes of $114,195. Entries are still open for about 4.5 hours, with the final chance to enter at about 8:45 tonight.

It’s looking pretty certain that the combined field will be well above 400 by the end of entries tonight, as they only need another 7 entries today to cap that.

  • Nearing 120 Entries before First Break

    Level:4 (200/400/400)
    Entries:117/117 (144/381)
    Prizes:Day 1c: $33,345 (Combined: $110,775)

There are about 20 minutes to play in Level 4, with the first break of 1c scheduled following this level. The field for today’s flight is now at 117 for a combined total of 381 and more than $110k in prizes. There are still about 5 hours left to enter this Deepstack game and bag a stack for tomorrow’s Day 2.

  • More than 100 Entries for 1c

    Level:3 (200/300/300)
    Entries:102/102 (129/366)
    Prizes:Day 1c: $29,070 (Combined: $106,500)

The 1c field is over 100, with Level 3 just underway. The combined field is now at 366, with 400+ very much in view. With the same number as yesterday for toda’s flight, the final prizes will be in the range of $120k, but I suspect today gets more than yesterday, so the final prize pool is likely to be in the $125k range by the end of entries, but that remains to be seen.

  • More than $100k in Prizes

    Level:2 (100/200/200)
    Entries:83/83 (110/347)
    Prizes:Day 1c: $23,655 (Combined: $101,085)

Level 2 has just begun and the combined pries are now over $100k. There are 83 entries in the game for today’s flight so far, pushing the combined total just shy of 350.

  • 66 Entries to Start the Day

    Level:1 (100/100/100)
    Entries:66/66 (93/330)
    Prizes:Day 1c: $18,810 (Combined: $96,240)

The final flight to the Deepstack Day 2 is now in progress with Level 1 ticking down to the end. They have 66 entries on the board for a combined total of 330 and total prizes of $96,240.

Among the players in their seats today are Chris Klimosko, Easton Walker, Juss Viet, Andy Truong, Melody Osgoode, Garry Chan, Don Fujita, Shoaib Syed, Gusto Katievo, John Senycz, Russ Sluchinski, Brady O’Hara, Stefan Maloney, Kirk Nilson, Krystin Hady, Alison Senycz, and Lillian Munch

  • Howat Bags Big on 1b

    Event 3:$340 Deepstack ($300 + $40)
    Date:Day 1a: Apr 3, 2 pm
    Day 1b: Apr 4, 2 pm
    Day 1c: Apr 5, 2 pm
    Day 2: Apr 6, Noon
    Blinds:30 Minutes (40 Min at 128 players)
    Starting Stack:25k
    Late Entry:11 Levels (~8:45 PM)
Day 1 Ends:10% of the starting field
Dave Howat, Day 1b and overall chip leader after two flights in the Deepstack

Dave Howat was the big stack from Day 1b, and he eclipsed the 1a leader by more than 150k. Howat bagged 739.5k to put him in the lead after two flights, while 1a leader Scott Johnson is in second. 2nd place stack from 1b, Alicia Dodds, is currently third going into the final flight.

Day 1c kicks off at 2 pm on Saturday, and based on the 1ab turnout, it looks like a good bet that the final tally will push well over 400 entries with 150+ on 1c at least. After two flights so far, the field is at 264 entries with combined prizes of $77,430. The expected turnout for 1c should easily push those prizes into 6 figures. There are now 27 players returning for Day 2 from the first two flights and the expectation is that, after 1c finishes, between 40 and 50 players will still be in play on Sunday’s Day 2.

Late entry on Day 1 is open for 11 levels with the final cutoff at about 8:45 pm, while the Day 1 flights will end when they play down to 10% of the starting field for each Day 1.

I’ll be focusing on this game for all the Day 1 flights before moving over to the side event once E3 bags.

  • Dave Howat Leads 1b Stacks

    Level:17 (4000/8000/8000)
    Entries:15/146 (27/264 combined)
    Prizes:Day 1b: $41,610 ($77,430 Combined)

There’s a new chip leader in two after Dave Howat bagged almost 740k at the end of Day 1b. That beats the 582,500 bagged by Scott Johnson on 1a. Alicia Dodds was the 2nd stack from 1b at 457k, which will put her as the 3rd biggest stack right now.

The bubble tonight took quite a while lasting most of Level 16 and a good part of Level 17. The final hand ended with 11:30 remaining in Level 17.

  • Bubble to the Bags

    Level:16 (3000/6000/6000)
    Entries:16/146 (28/264 combined)
    Prizes:Day 1b: $41,610 ($77,430 Combined)

They are down to 16 left in Day 1b with about 25 minutes to play in Level 16. The click is now paused for hand-for-hand play and they’ll take 2 minutes off the clock manually for each hand played now. The next elimination will bring out the bags for Day 1b, so it seems almost certain today will end earlier than yesterday.

  • Dodds Over 200k

    Level:15 (2500/5000/5000)
    Entries:20/146 (32/264 combined)
    Prizes:Day 1b: $41,610 ($77,430 Combined)

They are down to 20 now after Alicia Dodds sent a player to the rail and chipped up to over 200k in the process. She was in the tank to a shove with the covering stack but not by a huge amount. She finally made the call with ace-queen into ace-seven and held for the win.

  • Six Off the Bags at Break

    Level:14 (2000/4000/4000)
    Entries:21/146 (33/264 combined)
    Prizes:Day 1b: $41,610 ($77,430 Combined)

The 1b players are on a break now with 21 players left in the game. The bags will come out with 15 players remaining, so bubble play sometime in Level 15 is still looking probable.

Dave Howat still looks to be the leader right now, but he’s still sitting with the same 420k he had a few minutes ago.

  • Eight Off the Bags

    Level:14 (2000/4000/4000)
    Entries:23/146 (35/264 combined)
    Prizes:Day 1b: $41,610 ($77,430 Combined)

They are down to 23 left in 1b now, with about 8 minutes to play in level 14. At this point, it’s looking like they’ll be on the bubble sometime late in Level 15 or early in Level 16, but play slowed considerably near the end last night, so this could still drag out a bit.

  • 12 Off the Bags

    Level:14 (1500/3000/3000)
    Entries:27/146 (39/264 combined)
    Prizes:Day 1b: $41,610 ($77,430 Combined)

They are down to 27 players left as Level 14 begins. That puts them 12 off the bags, which will come out when there are 15 players remaining tonight.

It looks like Dave Howat is the chip leader right now, sitting with about 420k in front of him.

  • Entries Closed with 146 for 1b

    Level:12 (1500/2500/2500)
    Entries:36/146 (48/264 combined)
    Prizes:Day 1b: $41,610 ($77,430 Combined)

The entries are now closed for Day 1b, with the final tally at 146. That puts the combined total at 264 for prizes of $77,340. There are 36 players left in action and they’ll be playing down to 15 players tonight.

Day 1a took until 4:31 remaining in Level 17, just after midnight, before the bags came out, but given the numbers right now, it feels like today will end earlier than that. That said, my prediction of 150+ didn’t quite pan out, so who knows?

  • Final Level of Entry Just Beginning

    Level:11 (1000/2000/2000)
    Entries:55/143 (67/261 combined)
    Prizes:Day 1b: $40,755 ($76,530 Combined)

The pace of entries has slowed quite a bit since dinner, and the 150 number is looking a little less likely now. Level 11 is about to begin, which means the end of entries is about 45 minutes away.

The current 1b field is 143 with 55 players still in the action, for a combined total of 261 and prizes of $76,350.

  • Final Three Levels of Entry

    Level:9 (600/1200/1200)
    Entries:73/137 (85/255 combined)
    Prizes:Day 1b: $39,045 ($74,730 Combined)

The 1b players are back in their seats after the dinner break and the field is up to 137 entries for today’s flight. That puts the combined total at 255 for prizes of $74,730.

It’s still looking like a 150+ field for today is in the cards with about an hour and 40 minutes left to enter today. I’m expecting today’s final number to settle in between 150 and 160 entries.

  • 135 Entries for 1b at Dinner

    Level:8 (5000/1000/1000)
    Entries:87/135 (99/253 combined)
    Prizes:Day 1b: $38,475 ($74,130 Combined)

The 1b players are now on their dinner break after the end of Level 8 a couple of minutes ago. The 1b field is up to 135 for 253 in total so far. That puts the combined prizes just shy of $75k and makes the probability of a $100k+ final prize pool almost a certainty.

The 1b players will be back in their seats in about 40 minutes for the start of Level 9, and there will be three more levels of poker after the break before the end of entries for today.

  • Nearing 250 Entries Combined

    Level:7 (400/800/800)
    Entries:81/128 (93/246 combined)
    Prizes:Day 1b: $36,480 ($72,030 Combined)

The combined field is now up to 246 entries with 128 of those coming from today’s flight. There are just over 10 minutes to play in Level 7 and the dinner break is scheduled following Level 8.

Entries remain open until the start of Level 12, which should be about 8:45 pm tonight. After that, they’ll play down to 10% of the field before the bags come out. Day 1a ended with 4:31 remaining in Level 17, slightly after midnight.

  • 1b Now Ahead of 1a

    Level:6 (300/600/600)
    Entries:90/121 (102/239 combined)
    Prizes:Day 1b: $34,485 ($69,930 Combined)

After ~6.5 hours of entry, Day 1a ended with 118 entries. With the 1b action now in Level 6, today’s field has already beaten the 1a total.

The combined field is now at 239 entries, with 121 of those coming from today’s flight so far. That puts the combined prizes at just shy of $70k. Entries are still open on 1b for another 3.5 hours, so there is every chance this flight will push past 150 entries before it closes.

  • 1b Nears 1a Total in Level 5

    Level:5 (300/500/500)
    Entries:91/115 (103/233 combined)
    Prizes:Day 1b: $32,775 ($68,130 Combined)

The 1b field is now at 115, just 3 entries shy of the 1a total. That bodes well for a 150+ field for 1b by the time entries close down in about 4 hours.

I’ve just had another wander around the room and spotted some new faces I hadn’t seen earlier, including Regan Duong, WPT Global streamer Jordan Banfield, Kyle Dery, Bogdan Szafanowicz, Peter Amic, Tyler Thomas, Cardelle Szego, Skyler Yorke (who was deep in the PLO Bomb last night), David Thompson, Clayton Littke, Easton Walker, Nicholas Lee (who won the PLO Bomb last night), Shane Brotherwood, Wayne Hoffert, and Lapchi Duong.

  • More than 100 Entries before 1st Break

    Level:4 (200/400/400)
    Entries:101/101 (113/219 combined)
    Prizes:Day 1b: $28,785 ($63,930 Combined)

The pace today is significantly ahead of Day 1a with more than 100 entries already registered before the first break of the day. In yesterday’s flight, they only had 84 entries as of halfway through Level 5, so today’s pace is ~20% higher than Day 1a.

  • Nearly 100 Entries to Start Level 4

    Level:4 (200/400/400)
    Entries:94/94 (106/212 combined)
    Prizes:Day 1b: $26,790 ($61,830 Combined)

Level 4 has just begun and the field is up to 94 entries for 1b prizes of more than $26k already. That puts the combined prizes up to $61,790 with about 5 hours left to enter the game.

Among the players I’e spotted in the field since my last update are John Hansmeyer, Weston Pring, Anne Ngo, Doug Lee, and Hassan Issa.

  • Some Familiar Faces

    Level:2 (100/200/200)
    Entries:62/62 (74/180 combined)
    Prizes:Day 1b: $17,670 ($52,230 Combined)

As always, there are a fair number of familiar faces in the crowd to start Day 1b. Among the players I spotted are Russ Sluchinski, Stefan Maloney, Alison Senycz, John Cenycz, Reg Hampton, Wendy Wenaas, Scott Calvank, Greg Wood, Derek van Loon, Lillian Munch, Andy Truong, and Dave Shores.

  • Big Start for 1b

    Level:1 (100/100/100)
    Entries:55/55 (67/173 combined)
    Prizes:Day 1b: $15,675 ($50,130 Combined)

Day 1b is underway with about 5 minutes to play in Level 1. The field is at 55 entries already for combined prizes of more than $50k already and more than $15k from today’s entries.

  • Scott Johnson is the Stack to Beat for 1b Players

    Event 3:$340 Deepstack ($300 + $40)
    Date:Day 1a: Apr 3, 2 pm
    Day 1b: Apr 4, 2 pm
    Day 1c: Apr 5, 2 pm
    Day 2: Apr 6, Noon
    Blinds:30 Minutes (40 Min at 128 players)
    Starting Stack:25k
    Late Entry:11 Levels (~8:45 PM)
Day 1 Ends:10% of the starting field

Scott Johnson bagged the big stack from Day 1a with almost 600k in his bag. That was more than 200k ahead of second-place stack Phillip Clingo with 362k. Chris Ruddell (who was 10th in the Seniors game Wednesday), Scott Goodwin, and David van der Torre also bagged 300k+ stacks in 1a.

Day 1b kicks off at 2 pm on Friday, and based on the 1a turnout, it looks like a good bet that 1b will cap 150 entries. 1a ended up just shy of 120 entries, a very solid showing for an opening flight on a $340 multi-day here in the Super Stack. There is already $33,630 moving forward to Day 2 from the opening flight.

Late entry is open for 11 levels with the final cutoff at about 8:45 pm, while the Day 1 flights will end when they play down to 10% of the starting field for each Day 1.

I’ll be focusing on this game for all the Day 1 flights before moving over to the side event once E3 bags.

  • Scott Johnson Bags Biggest from 1a; Clingo in Second

The bags are in and Scott Johnson bagged biggest by quite a margin. He ended the day with almost 600k, with second-place Phillip Clingo more than 200k behind. Day 1a ended with 4:31 remaining in Level 17.

  • The Bags are Out

    Level:17 (4000/8000/8000)
    Entries:12/118
    Prizes:$33,630

They are down to 12 now after Scott Johnson burst the bubble tonight to bag up what looks like the big stack. I’ll verify the numbers shortly, but in the final hand, Johnson called a short stack shove with ace-queen over ace-five. It looked like they might play on when a five hit the flop, but the queen on the turn put Johnson back in front and he held for the win.

I’ll post the final players and chip counts shortly.

  • Bubble Time

    Level:17 (4000/8000/8000)
    Entries:13/118
    Prizes:$33,630

The clock is now paused for hand-for-hand play in Event #3 Day 1a. There are 13 players left with 12 bags expected, and they are removing 2 minutes off the clock manually for each hand played. There are now just over 17 minutes remaining in Level 17, so that should mean 9 more hands in this level, assuming they don’t lose a player first.

  • Four Off the Bags

    Level:16 (3000/6000/6000)
    Entries:16/118
    Prizes:$33,630

They are down to 16 left in 1a now, with Level 16 just underway. That puts the 4 away from the bags and three away from hand-for-hand play. The average stack right now is about 30 big blinds.

  • 20 Left in 1a

    Level:15 (25000/5000/5000)
    Entries:20/118
    Prizes:$33,630

They are down to 20 players left in Day 1a, putting them 8 players away from the bags coming out. There are more than 20 minutes to play in Level 15, so the bubble to the bags still looks like it will come sometime in Level 16. The average stack now is just shy of 30 big blinds.

It looks like Scott Goodwin is the chip leader at the moment with around 300k in front of him. Across the room on another table, Mohsen Shafizadeh and Terry Langdon are both playing around 240k for what look like the second stacks right now.

  • 12 Off the Bags

    Level:14 (2000/4000/4000)
    Entries:24/118
    Prizes:$33,630

They are down to 24 left in Day 1a of the first multi-day game. That puts them 12 off the bags with about 8 minutes to play in Level 14. It looks like a good bet for the bags to come out sometime early in Level 16, though the average stack is now over 30 (set to drop to ~25 bigs to start Level 15) so they are still pretty deep.

  • Final Three Tables of 1a

    Level:14 (2000/4000/4000)
    Entries:27/118
    Prizes:$33,630

They are down to 27 players left now in the opening flight of Event #3. That puts them 15 eliminations away from the bags but they are still pretty deep with the average stack sitting at about 27 big blinds now. It looks like they have at least a couple more hours of poker to play before the bags come out tonight.

  • Down to 36 Left

    Level:12 (1500/2500/2500)
    Entries:36/118
    Prizes:$33,630

They are down to the final four tables on Day 1a with 36 players left in the field. That puts them 24 off the bags for the night, so it looks like they may end up bagging before the end of Level 16.

  • 118 Entries Confirmed

    Level:12 (1500/2500/2500)
    Entries:45/118
    Prizes:$33,630

The numbers are confirmed at 118 entries for Day 1a. That confirms that there will be 12 bags at the end of the night tonight. The field is at 45 remaining now, so they need to lose 33 players before the bags come out, so they likely have several hours of poker remaining tonight.

Among the players I spotted in the action recently were Weston Pring, Lapchi Duong, Scott Johnson, and Stefan Maloney, who moved over to this one after an unsuccessful try at the PLO Bomb Pot game.

  • Entries Closed with 118 (Unofficial)

    Level:12 (1500/2500/2500)
    Entries:45/118
    Prizes:$33,630

Entries are now closed for the opening flight of Event #3 and the final unofficial total on the board is 118. If that holds on recount, that should mean $33,630 will be in the Day 2 pries with 12 players bagging chips at the end of the night tonight. I’ll confirm all the numbers shortly once the staff have finished going through all the money.

  • 30 Minutes Left to Enter 1a

    Level:11 (1000/2000/2000)
    Entries:54/116
    Prizes:$33,060

Level 11 is nearly complete and this will be the final level of entry. They’ll go for a break following this level, and when they return for Level 12, the 1s field will be set.

There are now 116 entries on the board for prizes of just over $33k — there may be a couple more entries before it shuts, but I expect the final analysis will have 12 bags at the end of the day tonight.

  • Four More Levels of Entry

    Level:9 (600/1200/1200)
    Entries:68/108
    Prizes:$30,780

The 1a players are back from their dinner break, and there are now four more levels of late entry for today’s flight. The field is at 108 after the dinner break for prizes of almost $31k.

  • 105 Entries on Break

    Level:8 (500/1000/1000)
    Entries:65/105
    Prizes:$29,925

The 1a players are now on their dinner break with the end of Level 8. That is somewhat earlier than the original structure, which was after Level 12 but it was moved up to give players an earlier dinner break.

There are 105 entries on the board as they start dinner, for prizes of just shy of $30k. Entries will remain open for 4 more levels after dinner, with the entry desk set to shut down at the start of Level 13.

  • Nearly 100 Entries

    Level:7 (400/800/800)
    Entries:74/99
    Prizes:$28,215

The field is up to 99 entries with about 15 minutes to play in Level 7. That puts the 1a prizes at more than $28k with about 3 hours left to enter today’s flight.

Kyle Dery has just arrived for today’s flight and is in his seat, and a few other new faces I spotted on my last tour of the room included Matt Kwong, Mohsen Shafizadeh, and Malcolm Buller, who was in the money in the Seniors last night.

  • More than $25k in 1a Prizes

    Level:6 (300/600/600)
    Entries:75/89
    Prizes:$25,365

Level 6 is just underway and the field is now pushing 90 entries. The prizes are sitting at just over $25k now and climbing. I’ve just had another walk around the room and spotted Patrick Corbet and Chris Ruddell, who were deep in Event #2 last night, as well as Johnny Dalphond, Stephen Dauphinais, Haven Taylor, JJ Johnstone, David Thompson, and Andy Truong.

  • Up to 84 Entries

    Level:5 (300/500/500)
    Entries:84/84
    Prizes:$23,940

Level 5 has just under 15 minutes left to play and the field is now at 84 entries and climbing. Entries are still open for around 4 hours so it looks reasonable to assume a 100+ field for today’s flight.

The structure sheet has the dinner break after Level 12, but that was deemed to be too late in the day for dinner, so it’s been moved up to the break after Level 8. That doesn’t change the end of late entries, but just shifts the duration of the breaks before it closes.

  • 50 Entries in Opening Level

    Level:1 (100/100/100)
    Entries:50/50
    Prizes:$14,250

The field has just hit 50 entries with just over 5 minutes to play in the opening level. Among the recent entries I spotted were Thomas Taylor, Tyler Panas, Peter Amic, and Kirk Nilson. The prizes are now just a couple of entries shy of $15k.

  • First Multi-Day Opens with 27 Players

    Level:1 (100/100/100)
    Entries:35/35
    Prizes:$9,975

Day 1a of Event #3 is now underway. There were 27 players to start the day, but that has already jumped to 35 as I write the post. Among the players in action today are a couple of deep runners from yesterday’s games. Stephen Scott was at the Seniors final table last night, while Lillian Munch made the final four in the side event. Among the others joining them in today’s action so far are Jaqueline Ray, Russ Sluchinski, and Terry Langdon.

There’s been a small change to the structure for Event #3 — Day 1a will play down to 10% no matter how late it goes. The previous structure said they’d bag after 16 levels, but that has been changed to ensure all players are in the money for Day 2. The other small change I noticed was that blinds will increase to 40 minutes once the field is down to 18 players on Day 2.

    Starting Stack:25k
    Late Entry:11 Levels (~8:45 PM)
Day 1 Ends:10% of the starting field

The first multi-day game of the series is set to start on Thursday with Day 1a of Event #3. The action gets going at 2 [m with a 25k start stack and players will be playing 30 minutes in each blind level.

  • Event #3: $340 Deepstack ($300 + $40)

    Event 3:$340 Deepstack ($300 + $40)
    Date:Day 1a: Apr 3, 2 pm
    Day 1b: Apr 4, 2 pm
    Day 1c: Apr 5, 2 pm
    Day 2: Apr 6, Noon
    Blinds:30 Minutes (40 Min at 128 players)
    Starting Stack:25k
    Late Entry:11 Levels (~8:45 PM)
Day 1 Ends:10% of the starting field

The first multi-day game of the series is set to start on Thursday with Day 1a of Event #3. The action gets going at 2 [m with a 25k start stack and players will be playing 30 minutes in each blind level.

Late entry is open for 11 levels with the final cutoff at about 8:45 pm, while the Day 1 flights will end when they play down to 10% of the starting field for each Day 1.

I’ll be focusing on this game for all the Day 1 flights before moving over to the side event once E3 bags.

  • Andy Truong Biggest on 1c

    Level:19 (6000/12000/12000)
    Entries:20/201 (47/465)
    Prizes:Day 1c: $57,285 (Combined: $132,525)

It was a long bubble tonight with play going well into Level 19 before the end finally came. After the marathon session, Calgary’s Andy Truong bagged the biggest stack from the day with almost 500k.

They are down to 21 now with 26:26 left in Level 18 ad the clock is now paused until the bubble bursts, with two minutes coming off for each hand played.

  • 4 Off the Bags

    Entries:24/201 (51/465)
    Prizes:Day 1c: $57,285 (Combined: $132,525)

Level 17 has just begun and they are now 4 eliminations off the end of the night with 24 players left.

  • Howat Bags Big on 1b

    Event 3:$340 Deepstack ($300 + $40)
    Date:Day 1a: Apr 3, 2 pm
    Day 1b: Apr 4, 2 pm
    Day 1c: Apr 5, 2 pm
    Day 2: Apr 6, Noon

    Entries:6/465

Phillip Clingo raised the hijack to 120k and got a call from David MacNeil in the cutoff as well as big blind Shane Chief. Chief checked the 743 flop before Clingo fired 150k.

MacNeil made the call while Chief mucked his hand. Clingo sized up to 250k on the 8 turn, then up to 575k on the 5 river, getting calls from McNeil the whole way.

“Set,” Clingo said, showing pocket fives. MacNeil rolled over pocket sixes for a straight on the river

Both remaining players checked the 2 turn and after a check from MacNeil on the 8 river, Dodds bet 150k. MacNeil had to think about it for a bit, but he made the call with ace-queen for second pair, while Dodds was on a busted diamond draw and gutshot with ten-nine.

Dave Howat opened to 25k from the cutoff before Jordan Banfield shoved 260k from the button. Howat made the call for what amounted to a race between his ace-eight and the king-jack of Banfield.

Banfield bricked the flop, but found his jack on the turn of 6107J4. The jack gave Banfield the lead, but it also gave Howat a bigger draw to the spades, along with his ace. He bricked the river, however, and sent the double to Banfield, putting the WPT Global streamer up to about 600k and dropping start-of-day leader Howat to about 200k.
